Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC) is currently seeking a full-time Supervisory Electronics Engineer to work in the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Systems Directorate, Minuteman III (MMIII) Systems Division, Ground Electrical Branch at Hill Air Force Base near Layton, Utah.

This position (205914) is an NH-0855-04. The basic salary range for this position is $125,776 - $164,094 based on Value of Position (92), which includes locality. **Value of Position: If your current basic salary is within the band, but above the stated Value of Position, your basic salary will not be reduced if you are selected for the position.

The AFNWC ICBM Systems Directorate’s MMIII Systems Division manages the current ICBM technical life extension program and integrated life-cycle activities, including equipment spares, storage and transportation, modifications, and equipment replacement. America’s nuclear triad remains capable, flexible, resilient and ready, but it must be continually modernized to maintain a credible deterrent against current and emerging threats. This position plays an important role in providing a strategic deterrent to nuclear attack against the United States.

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the MMIII Ground Electrical Software Section Lead Engineer, overseeing the sustainment of the MMIII software programs and their associated development programs to include Airborne Launch Control System (ALCS), Higher Authority Communications/Rapid Message Processing Element (HAC/RMPE), ICBM Operational Software Sustainment Program (IOSSP), Trainers, and Support Equipment.

RANGE OF DUTIES:
  • Serves as the supervisor for Ground Electrical Branch’s Software Section engineers and computer scientists, leading as the recognized PAE ICBM technical authority for MMIII software and directing the engineering design, sustainment, and modernization of critical MMIII systems, including ALCS; SELM, GMLEC, GMATS; IOSSP; HAC/RMPE, and HACTS 2.0, ensuring zero degradation to nuclear surety.
  • Oversees the overarching software/electronics architecture of the software portfolio. Innovates engineering processes to overcome obsolescence and capability gaps within the Ground Electrical subsystem, ensuring mature integration of software across physical MMIII weapon system boundaries.
  • Leads, mentors, and directs a highly technical, multidisciplinary section of general engineers, mechanical engineers, electronics engineers and computer scientists. Fosters an environment of engineering rigor and sets the standard for technical excellence.
  • Negotiates technical requirements, software baselines, and sustainment strategies with support contractors and partner divisions to resolve programmatic or technical roadblocks.
  • Articulates complex software/electronic risks, system readiness levels, and test outcomes dynamically to PEO leadership, SES members, and operational stakeholders (e.g., AFGSC, USSTRATCOM, NNSA).
  • Innovates engineering processes to overcome obsolescence and capability gaps within the Ground Electrical subsystem, ensuring mature integration of software across physical MMIII weapon system boundaries.
Desired Skills:
  • Five (5) or more years of progressively complex engineering experience is typically preferred.
  • Refined communication and teamwork skills sufficient to effectively interface with internal and external stakeholders at all levels, as well as the independence, assertiveness, self-reliance, and tenacity to get the job done are desired to successfully perform the duties of this position.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience directly leading, mentoring, and managing multidisciplinary software engineering teams consisting of both civil service (GS) personnel and external contractor workforces.
  • Direct experience navigating the Risk Management Framework (RMF) to achieve and maintain an Authority to Operate (ATO), with a strong preference for candidates who have successfully implemented Continuous ATO (cATO) pathways for mission-critical systems.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience championing, scaling, and executing modern Agile software development methodologies (e.g., Scrum, Kanban, SAFe) within a government or enterprise environment.
  • Understanding of DoD weapon systems electronics and software issues, and experience working with government organizations in areas such as acquisition, production, maintenance, repair, life-cycle logistics, engineering support, testing and evaluation, or other sustainment activities is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with software and hardware integration, particularly MMIII systems, is ideal.
  • Technical advanced degree is highly desirable. A systems engineering certificate is desirable. Degree in Business Administration, Economics, Logistics, or other related fields is desirable.

  • Employee must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance with special sensitivity, Special Access Program (SAP), and Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access eligibility.
  • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment, and participation in random drug testing.
  • Employee may be required to work overtime or an irregular work shift.
  • Employee must meet Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) requirements, which includes achieving Engineering & Technical Management “Practitioner” certification category within required timeframe after appointment.
  • In accordance with the Ethics in Government Act, 1978, employee may be required to file an Office of Government Ethics (OGE) Form 450, Confidential Financial Disclosure Report, upon appointment and will be required to file annually.
  • Work may require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
