Job Description

This position is responsible for supervising, training, and evaluating assigned personnel. They will determine work priorities, plan schedules, assign and review work. They will serve as an active member of the service team, including creating beverages, operating the cash register, and interacting with guests.

Duties

  1. Prepares food following recipes and applying individual portion control standards.
  2. Properly and safely measures, weighs, and combines ingredients for simple menu items.
  3. Utilizes kitchen utensils, appliances, and heavy/industrial equipment in food preparation (ovens, knives, peelers, dicers, slicers, mixers, industrial dish machines, recycling, stoves, etc.).
  4. Serves food courteously and respectfully, with proper portion control and menu knowledge.
  5. Loads, carries, and transports hot or cold food items or containers to customers, serving lines, or dining tables safely, efficiently, and timely.
  6. Loads and transports food carts to and from designated areas.
  7. Washes, sanitizes, and stores pots, pans, and kitchen utensils.
  8. Scrapes dishes and cleans tables and serving areas.
  9. Cleans counters and floors following proper kitchen standards.
  10. Assists with special events and catering needs across the University and campuses.
  11. Supports other food service staff as needed. The described functions are not exhaustive.

Note: Employees on a 5-hour shift typically receive a free meal. Uniforms are provided at no cost but must be maintained by the employee.

Job Requirements

Required Education: High school diploma or GED, or culinary school graduate, AND:

  • 36 months experience in food services, including 12 months in a supervisory role.

Skills

  • Proficient in using kitchen tools and equipment.
  • Safe, sanitary handling of food and equipment.
  • Basic arithmetic skills for serving and inventory tasks.
  • Ability to read and interpret menus, instructions, and emails.
  • Effective communication in English, orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrates Housing and Food Services core values.
  • Basic understanding of nutrition and portion control.

Department Preferences

  • ServSafe Certification.
  • More than 36 months of restaurant kitchen supervisory/cooking experience.
  • Hepatitis A vaccination or annual testing required if hired.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Background check required.
  • No felony convictions related to abuse, theft, sexual assault, or drug distribution.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs., pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs., and standing/walking for long periods.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends, especially for 24/7 operations.

Supervision: Reports to Restaurant Manager.

Additional Instructions: Final candidates will undergo TB testing as per university policy.
