Qualifications

  • 3 years’ experience in a medical center or similar setting.
  • 1 year of supervision, charge nurse, or project implementation experience.
  • Two years of computer system networking experience.
  • Knowledge of day-to-day operating room activities.
  • Strong leadership, organizational skills, and ability to set priorities.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills; proficiency with Microsoft Windows.

Job description

Summary

The Business Office Supervisor is responsible for leadership, oversight, and performance of all business office functions at Great Lakes Bay Surgery Center (GLBSC) and Riecker Surgery Center (RSC), including patient registration, scheduling, insurance verification, medical records, coding, and full revenue cycle operations and purchasing. This role ensures financial performance, regulatory compliance, data collection and efficient workflows while supporting surgical services through accurate charge capture, reporting, and coordination. The Business Office Supervisor serves as a key member of the leadership team and works collaboratively with clinical and administrative departments to optimize operations and enhance the patient experience.

Responsibilities
  • Extract and analyze data to generate essential reports for Surgical Services performance and for Certificate of Need (CON) submission; provide additional reports as requested.
  • Serve as liaison between finance and the perioperative leadership team to enhance operations.
  • Actively participate with surgical services leadership to identify and prioritize key initiatives and special projects and key performance indicators.
  • Support surgical services leadership in developing operating and capital budgets, including specific project reviews and operational improvement plans.
  • Maintain scheduling and purchasing staff schedule, grant time‑off requests, and check payroll system for completeness and accuracy.
  • Work with the System Director of Surgical Services and OR Manager to develop and support service line initiatives.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as source and unit expert for staff; link nursing leadership with nursing care through the application of organizational and nursing service policies, procedures, and care delivery model.
  • Use code of ethics for nurses to guide leadership and practice.
  • Acquire knowledge and competence reflective of current nursing practice; promote innovation and evidence‑based practice.
  • Support surgical services leadership to improve OR efficiencies, increase productivity, maximize revenue, improve charge accuracy, and reduce cost and waste.
  • Report data and oversee OR productivity analysis with financial overviews.
  • Oversee RN staff who monitor and coordinate medical device and bone/tissue tracking, incoming products, and instrumentation for procedures, ensuring FDA and regulatory compliance.
  • Manage scheduling and purchasing office staff related to hiring, discipline, termination, performance evaluations.
  • Follow up with capital requests and disseminate recall information; preview OR schedule in advance.
  • Act as co‑chair of SPOC committee and participate in SPGC meetings; provide additional data analysis support.
  • Work with OR education coordinator for orientation, staff development, and promote professional growth.
  • Coordinate communication with other departments for outpatient procedures and admissions affecting the OR schedule; collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, surgical services staff, and other personnel for coordinated patient services.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies: The Joint Commission, CMS, MDPH, AAMI, ANSI, AORN, IAHCSMM.
  • Coordinate data management throughout Surgical Services Department by working with OR Specialty Coordinators, OR Purchasing office, Materials Management, Physician Offices, Ancillary Departments, and affiliates.
  • Investigate and resolve issues within EMR application and charge issues related to accounts.
  • Maintain communication lines with peers, subordinates, superiors within designated area, nursing service, and other departments within the Medical Center.
Certifications and Licensures

Required Education

Associate's Degree. Associate's degree in accounting. Bachelor's degree preferred.

Experience, Training and Skills
  • Knowledge of nursing practices and procedures normally acquired through 3 years’ experience working in a medical center or similar setting.
  • Knowledge of nursing leadership normally acquired through 1 year of supervision, charge nurse, project implementation; professional development program, shared governance leadership role, or equivalent.
  • Two years of computer system network experience required.
  • Knowledge of day‑to‑day activities in the operating room.
  • Interpersonal skills to communicate successfully with individuals and groups; articulate ideas clearly.
  • Strong leadership, organizational skills, and ability to set priorities.
  • Competency in Microsoft Windows.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions
  • Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, death.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials.
  • Move freely about facility; perform job functions as outlined.
  • Vision and hearing necessary.
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk for long periods; may require postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, crouching.
  • Some exposure to blood‑borne pathogens; follow MyMichigan Health testing as required.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance and stay awake.
  • Dexterity required; ability to perform repetitive movements.
  • Physical demand level: Sedentary; must occasionally lift or carry 0‑10 lbs.
