Responsibilities

  • Ensure safety is the core focus at the site and that MSHA, state and other regulations are followed.
  • Administer safety system training and recruit qualified instructors.
  • Monitor health and safety responsibilities, assess performance, and document findings.
  • Conduct dust and noise sampling, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
  • Maintain compliance databases, conduct audits, and track hours.

Responsibilities:

The responsibility of the Safety Supervisor is toensure that safety is the core focus at the site and that all MSHA, State and other regulations are followed and documented in accordance with the law and site requirements.

Duties will include:
  • Responsible for administration of Peabody safety system training, including recruiting qualified instructors.
  • Ensure that all employees are aware of and have acknowledged the health and safety responsibilities specific to their job/position and periodically assess performance.
  • Identify positive reinforcements and negative consequences.
  • Compliance with MSHA & state agencies.
  • Attend conferences.
  • Document findings.
  • Data entry in compliance / safety databases.
  • Communicate findings.
  • Track hours.
  • Investigate citations.
  • Preventative compliance.
  • Dust sampling and documentation,
  • Noise sampling and documentation.
  • Peer interactions and risk assessment initiatives.
  • Perform regulatory duties associated with rescue chambers, SCSR, gas monitors, mine seals, and lifelines.
  • Quarterly escapeway drill training.
  • 90-day SCSR checks and documentation.
  • Safety compliance audits.
  • SWP and SOP implementation into workforce as training tools.
  • Predictive compliance recordkeeping.
  • Evaluate performance of union safety committee.

About you:
  • Must possess high school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience is preferred as a Safety Supervisor or in a safety-related field.
  • A minimum of four (4) years coal mining experience with a thorough knowledge of state and federal mining regulations is required.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills and ability to coordinate with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months:
  • Oxygen and Methane Testing
  • EMT Certification or ability to obtain.
  • Respirable Dust Testing.
  • Willing to work any shift and on scheduled weekends.
  • Knowledgeable in State and Federal mining regulations.
  • Ability to assist injury prevention and investigation activities.
  • Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months: Oxygen and Methane Testing, Noise Level Testing, Respirable Dust Testing, MSHA Certified Instructor
Physical Requirements - Underground:
  • Must have the ability to stand for prolonged periods of time on uneven, rocky surfaces.
  • Must have the ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles.
  • Must have the ability to walk for up to 4 hours at a time. Will be required to walk through different sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and headroom.
  • Walking ability will be judged according to SCSR emergency evacuation plan required and approved by MSHA.
  • Must have the ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA.
  • Must have the ability to bend or stoop for a full work period as a result of mine height.
  • Must have the ability to climb up and down stairs/steps and climb on and off equipment and ladders.
  • Must have the ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have rapid reflex movements of the arms and legs as well as good hand to eye coordination.
