Overview

6 Tower is a Cardiothoracic and Vascular Intermediate Care Post-Surgical unit providing comprehensive nursing care to patients requiring less monitoring than ICU, but more than a Medical-Surgical unit. Nurses on 6T care for patients undergoing procedures like coronary artery bypass grafts, heart valve repairs, thoracic and aortic aneurysm repairs, lobectomies, VATS, advanced wound therapies, limb amputations, peripheral vascular bypass grafts, and diagnostic cardiac catheterizations. They manage drains, tubes, invasive lines, interpret cardiac rhythms, and monitor cardiac drips. Ideal candidates have strong critical thinking skills, thrive in high acuity settings, participate actively in team care, and seek professional growth.

Job Summary

Responsible for direct patient care and assisting the manager with daily operations including care coordination, resource allocation, communication, patient throughput, program oversight, staff development, performance appraisal, quality improvement, service recovery, and regulatory compliance. Maintains clinical and professional competency relevant to the patient population.

Essential Functions

• Supports quality and effective nursing practice and service delivery
• Participates in hiring, supervision, and staff development
• Promotes communication through staff meetings and huddles
• Ensures compliance with laws and policies
• Rounds on patients, staff, and physicians to monitor satisfaction and care quality
• Delegates care appropriately
• Sets expected outcomes and evaluates progress
• Performs nursing care, assists with treatments, and administers medications
• Manages patient flow and staffing based on volume and acuity

Physical Requirements

Walking, standing, sitting, lifting up to 35 pounds, reaching, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling. Fluent in English. Good senses and finger dexterity. Critical thinking required.

Education, Experience, and Certifications

Graduate from an accredited Nursing school. Current RN license. Minimum two years nursing experience preferred. Management experience preferred. BSN required. RN candidates without a BSN must enroll in a BSN program within 1 year and complete it within 3 years. BLS certification required. Professional certification within 1 year of eligibility may be required. Additional qualifications may be specified by department leaders.
