Job description

Serves as the system-wide key contact for service line/specialty specific coding and proactively educates coding/documentation guidelines and concepts within a specific specialty. Collaborates with Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Senior director administrators, Production and Department support leaders for problem resolution and trends in payer-specific rules/coverage. Educates Physicians, Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), Medical Group and Clinic Leadership to improve coding and documentation. Shares knowledge with Patient Service Area (PSA) Liaisons, Production Coding, and Department Support to enhance coding, documentation, and charge capture opportunities. This role is virtual due to system-wide support for specific service lines/specialties. Note: "Clinicians" refers to all billing providers.

Essential Functions

  1. Provides service line/specialty-specific coding/documentation education and feedback related to coding changes (CPT including E&M, modifiers, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS), annual code updates, payer requirements, and payer rejection resolution to assigned Physicians/APPs. Partners with CMOs to standardize coding processes across the specialty. Presents coding/documentation education to CMOs, Physicians/APPs, and Senior Director Administrators. Coordinates with PSA Liaisons for support.
  2. Conducts orientations for all Physicians/APPs, residents/students, and clinical team members on coding and documentation. Performs new clinician documentation reviews upon request.
  3. Coordinates responses to questions and feedback from Physicians/APPs, Locum Tenens, residents/students, and partners including Compliance, Internal Audit, Physician Compensation, Clinical Informatics, and others.
  4. Queries Physicians/APPs, Locum Tenens, residents/students to resolve coding questions and relays feedback and education accordingly.
  5. Monitors charge sessions requiring additional info in Epic work queues to ensure timely documentation and billing.
  6. Participates in and provides coding and documentation info at meetings with CMOs, Physicians/APPs, and in educational sessions, including virtual meetings.
  7. Collaborates with PSA Liaisons to review and guide on Epic order entry, diagnosis, charge capture, SmartSets, and templates.
  8. Develops monthly newsletters to educate on coding updates and communicates new services performed by Physician/APPs.
  9. Identifies trends and opportunities to improve documentation and revenue capture. Attends relevant conferences to stay updated on coding and billing standards.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Certification: CCA, CCS-P, RHIA, RHIT, CPC, SCP, or equivalent, obtained within 1 year.
  • Issued by: AHIMA, AAPC, or BMSC.
  • Education: Advanced training beyond High School, including an accredited Medical Coding program.
  • Experience: Typically 5 years in advanced professional coding and 3 years in educating clinicians.
