The Pharmacy Supervisor operates under the direction of the System Pharmacy Technician Manager with professional oversight from the System VP, Pharmacy. The position supervises the technical and human resource components of the pharmacy technicians and provides day-to-day support for all technician activities, including the preparation, dispensing, charging, and delivery of medications to patients. This role is also integral to the overall daily operations of the Pharmacy, including ensuring the quality of sterile products. Patients served range from Neonate to Adult-Geriatric.
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates proficiency and expertise in performing the duties of all pharmacy technician shifts at all sites.
- Supervises pharmacy technicians, including interviewing, hiring, training, performance reviews, competencies, and scheduling. Assesses educational and training needs and develops programs to support their development, competence, and proficiency. Manages the pharmacy technician ladder program in conjunction with the Pharmacy Technician Manager. Ensures training is completed in a timely manner with proper documentation to comply with regulatory requirements.
- Oversees daily operations of pharmacy technicians by analyzing workflow data and adjusting schedules and assignments accordingly. Delegates workload based on individual skill levels and responds promptly to schedule requests.
- Maintains constant communication with the pharmacist in charge and pharmacy leadership team.
- Demonstrates understanding and ability to use current equipment such as pneumatic tubes, fax machines, printers, IV and PN compounders, Pyxis machines, carousels, unit-dosing software, high-speed packagers, barcoding, and medication reconciliation software. Provides training and administers competencies for staff on all equipment and software.
- Communicates professionally and courteously with customers and coworkers, respecting confidentiality and boundaries.
- Supports teamwork by actively participating in departmental changes, assisting coworkers, and onboarding new employees. Ensures all shift work is completed before departure.

- Maintains departmental operations that are cost-effective, aware of financial issues, and promotes participation in cost reduction initiatives.
- Completes performance improvement and quality assurance activities, including unit inspections, prepackaging logs, and IV room hood cleaning. Ensures compliance with USP <797> and <800> standards, reviewing sterile technique testing results and taking corrective actions when necessary.
- Performs pharmacy unit inspections as scheduled, ensuring accuracy.
- Maintains a clean, organized, and safe pharmacy environment, including restocking shelves, cleaning workstations, and returning medications to stock.
- Promotes the Mission, Vision, and Values of UPMC Pinnacle System. Performs additional duties as assigned.
- Participates in special projects and serves as a departmental representative on committees as required.
