Job summary

Charles River Laboratories in Ashland, OH seeks a Training Supervisor to provide orientation for new technical personnel and oversee training of staff in basic and intermediate GLP laboratory techniques.   • Strong written and verbal communication; ability to multitask, prioritize and meet deadlines.

Job Overview
BASIC SUMMARY:

Provide orientation for new technical personnel. Oversee and conduct training of technical personnel in basic and intermediate level laboratory techniques. Coordinate training for advanced-level technical techniques. Participate in developing process improvements and interdepartmental projects.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Ensure that technicians meet minimum proficiency standards. Ensure opportunity for achievement of core competencies for all levels of technicians.
  • Direct general orientation of new laboratory employees to preclinical GLP techniques and procedures.
  • Ensure new employees are trained in the use and interpretation of SOPs and study protocols, animal handling, and correct procedures for hand-recorded and computerized data entry.
  • Ensure employees are completely familiar with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) use and requirements.
  • Participate in hiring recommendations for new personnel, assess the progress of new technicians, and write job performance reviews (3-6 months) as needed. Ensure new technicians meet minimum proficiency standards prior to assignment to work groups.
  • Ensure that all training is documented, and the training database is maintained in a timely fashion and in compliance with SOPs and GLPs. Ensure timely dissemination of database updates to schedulers and managers.
  • Ensure high standards of care for animals maintained for training purposes, and ensure appropriate documentation for maintenance and use of the animals.
  • Assist in developing and implementing new training techniques, cross-train employees and maintain consistency concerning training documentation and procedures.
  • Communicate with Training Coordinator to ensure technicians are scheduled for various required in-house training sessions and ensure that they attend required training sessions.
  • Provide direct daily supervision and review work of assigned departmental employees to ensure accuracy and to ensure adherence to pertinent departmental policies, practices, and procedures (SOPs, safety procedures and biosafety protocols). Partner with Human Resources and depart-mental management to assist in the handling of disciplinary issues. Draft appropriate personnel action paperwork.
  • Identify training and development needs of direct reports. Assist in the development, implementation and delivery of departmental training programs; ensure that direct reports receive departmental orientation and necessary on-the-job training. Oversee maintenance of group training manual and training records.
  • Provide regular coaching and counseling. Assist in preparation and delivery performance reviews of direct reports.
  • Schedule overtime as authorized. Review and approve timecards. Coordinate vacation/time off schedules.
  • Recommend short-range operating objectives, organizational structure of direct reports and staffing requirements. Assist in the development of a departmental plan for backup and succession of key technical personnel.
  • Ensure optimum performance of group function. Recommend and implement techniques to improve productivity, increase efficiencies, cut costs, take advantage of opportunities, and maintain state-of-the-art practices.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.
The pay for this salaried position is $70,000. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.

Job Description
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in science and/or teaching related discipline recommended.
  • Experience: 5 years related experience in a GLP laboratory facility with 2 of those years working with non-human primates, performing, and teaching technical duties.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  • Certification/Licensure: LAT required, LATG preferred for Technical Supervisor/ AALAS certification preferred for non-technical Supervisor.
  • Other: In-depth understanding of regulations and GLPs/SOPs. Effective writing skills and verbal communications. Ability to multitask, prioritize and meet deadlines. Ability to interact and communicate
