Job description

Position Purpose:

Under general direction of the Manager of Sterile Processing, is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of personnel and processes affecting cost effective decontamination, processing, assembly, sterilization, storage, purchasing and distribution of sterile and non-sterile medical devices utilized in patient care in accordance with Federal, State, and JCAHO requirements, and organizational goals.

Nature and Scope:

The Supervisor of Sterile Processing is accountable for the 24-hour management of human and material resources in the sterilization and delivery of items used in patient care.

This position coordinates and directs the activities related to departmental goals, budget, and the functioning of the Sterile Processing Unit.

The incumbent manages the staff by interviewing, hiring, training, evaluating, counseling, and guiding their professional growth. This position cooperates with all areas in the facility to collaborate in the delivery of safe, efficient, cost-effective health care.

The items prepared are for use in the care of patients ranging in age from neonatal through geriatric patients.

The major challenges to this position are organizing, planning, staffing, directing, coordinating, maintaining, and evaluating the operations of the Sterile Processing unit, and ensuring that services provided are efficient, effective and consistent with the vision, mission, goals and policies of the hospital administration and the governing board.

Decisions that must be referred to the Manager/Director are approvals for capital equipment acquisitions, personnel position approvals, deviations from policy, budgeted expenditures in excess of $1000.00, final budgetary approval for Sterile Processing, and final hiring and termination decisions.

It is common to encounter potential hazards in the healthcare environment. Some of these hazards could include, but are not limited to: Radiation, Toxic Chemicals, Biological Hazards, Heat, Noise, Dust and Stress. Renown Health has a Safety Management Program in place addressing these issues.

This position does not provide patient care.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  1. Specific knowledge of aseptic techniques, microbiology, patient care procedures, medical-surgical devices and equipment, inventory control, sterilization, and sterile storage requirements.
  2. Ability to work in a system characterized by stress, intensity and a demand for high levels of performance with varied work hours.
  3. Knowledge of corporate, federal, state, OSHA and JCAHO regulations as well as current legal bioethical issues.
  4. Knowledge of supply distribution and patient charge systems.
  5. Knowledge of departmental budgeting and budget execution.
  6. Ability to understand and implement materials management inventory control computer system.
  7. Knowledge and management techniques used in developing cost containment measures without jeopardizing customer service.
  8. Skilled in computers and common computer software i.e. Excel, Word for Windows.
  9. Safety training skills.
  10. Knowledge of infection control policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications: Requirements - Required and/or Preferred

Education: Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English. Bachelor degree preferred.

Experience: Minimum of three years experience in Central Supply or Surgical Services (preferably in the O.R.) is preferred.

License(s): Nevada State R.N./L.P.N license or Bachelor degree in related field preferred.

Certification(s): CSPDT or CRCST required at hire and maintained throughout employment.

Computer / Typing: Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and Word and have the ability to use the computer to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
