The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is the largest organization in the United States dedicated to preventing and addressing homelessness. In partnership with other City Agencies and Nonprofit Organizations, DHS works to prevent homelessness before it begins, reduces street homelessness, provides temporary shelter, and connects individuals and families to stable housing with a focus on accountability, empathy, and equity.

DHS is committed to continuous improvement and employs innovative strategies to deliver high-quality services that support a swift transition from shelter to self-sufficiency. The Agency manages hundreds of facilities and operates with a large team as well as a several billion-dollar budget to meet the diverse needs of New Yorkers experiencing homelessness.

HERO is the sole 24/7 DHS organizational unit that identifies and secures shelter for families and single adults who apply for emergency housing assistance. HERO is composed of five units: Vacancy Control for Families with Children and Single Adults, Serious Incidents Unit, Special Projects, Strategic Initiatives and Portfolio Management.

The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is recruiting one (1) Supervisor II (SS) to function as Supervisor of Placement & Vacancy Control Unit, who will:

- Serve as back-up and support to HERO – PATH Liaison (including complete log outs, send out Code 5 Reports, return to Intake, flip overnight cases to conditionals and submit SARS), when required.

- Monitor Adult Vacancy Control inbox and hotline, and handle day-time transfer requests from the Adult Division.

- Supervise, train, and monitor staff on activities of shelter placements.

- Oversee HERO email inboxes and the HERO telephone Hotline; answer mail and telephone inquiries, and complete providers’ requests promptly as required.

- Prepare daily work assignments and distribute SARS and other HERO activities.

- Maintain controls on staff attendance, posting appropriate data and standard forms, holding conferences with staff as needed, and completing staff evaluations periodically.

- Ensure adequate coverage during working hours.

- Prepare the list of staff for Overtime.

- Work with the Manager to support Supervisor I in supervision and Placements.

- Prepare daily reports relevant to HERO management.

- Provide coverage when the Manager is out.

- Ensure that all cases are completed and troubleshoot difficult cases in a timely manner.

- Refer staff to the DHS Training Bureau to ensure social service staff receive adequate and ongoing training. Including all agency identified mandatory training.

Hours/Schedule: Tuesday – Saturday 4:00PM – 12:00AM.

Minimum Qualifications

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of full-time satisfactory experience in social casework, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
