SUPERVISOR-NURSING
The University of Alabama at Birmingham

This position acts as a bridge between patients, families, and surgeons, ensuring effective communication and continuity of care. Key responsibilities include scheduling GI surgeries, endoscopic procedures, and follow-up visits, participating in multidisciplinary rounds, coordinating patient care across disciplines, and providing leadership and supervision to five Registered Nurses (RNs).

General Responsibilities
  • To direct and implement the daily functions for assigned outpatient clinical areas.

  • To provide and manage quality patient care as well as quality service to providers.

  • To implement RN specific duties for specific patient populations.

  • To utilize critical thinking skills in evaluation of care, patient teaching and the triage of patients.

  • To display good rapport and professionalism with all internal and external customers.

  • Under the general direction of leadership, to support and execute all clinic functions; adhere to all applicable state, federal and local laws pertaining to an ambulatory care center; and monitor standards as established by UAB Medicine to meet all applicable accreditation guidelines.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
  • Evaluates and improves clinic flow. Serves as the supervisor and point of contact for designated clinic; performs clinic nurse and administrative duties as needed. Oversees the day-to-day clinic operations of all designated clinics or areas according to established policies and procedures. Addresses problems and implements solutions. Collaborates with and provides administrative support to leadership as needed. Plans and revises daily staff assignments as needed and schedules lunch and break times appropriately. Evaluates space and approves special physician clinics when needed. Schedules monthly staff or other department meetings per schedule or as requested. Participates in monthly staff meetings. Works with human resources and leadership to handle any employee related issues in a timely manner.

  • Updates time and attendance weekly. Makes all necessary adjustments to employees’ Kronos punches. Monitors and records all tardies, absences, late from lunches and unapproved overtime. Reviews and approves all requests for time off. Ensures that all violations of the attendance policy are promptly reported to leadership.

  • departmental check off with new employees. Ensures staff is cross-trained and/or oriented appropriately. Performs annual competencies on direct reports, including but not limited to, code 10 module, age-specific competencies and domestic violence competencies. Monitors and schedules appropriate training/screenings (i.e. annual safety). Ensures policies and procedures are followed and regulatory standards are met. Coaches staff to improve performance by supporting training programs, monitors unit/staff reports, administers disciplinary action where appropriate and conducts appropriate follow-up with employee. In collaboration with leadership, completes annual performance evaluations, interviews, hires, terminates and trains subordinate personnel in a timely manner and according to department/unit objectives. Coaches staff to improve performance as evidenced by progressive disciplinary action. Keeps leadership apprised of issues and updates.

  • Participates in CQI. Gathers and reports CQI data and monthly medical record audits to clinic leadership and appropriate personnel. Completes housekeeping reports and hazard surveillance form monthly. Interacts with staff, leadership and physicians to identify and improve clinical operations issues.

  • Ensures educational activities of clinic are conducted through: fulfillment of responsibilities of appointment to committees, teams, etc. Competencies and job descriptions are reviewed and updated as appropriate. Cooperates with training department to ensure staff continuing education needs are met.

  • Maintains accountability for safe environment for patients and others. Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding departmental operations including all regulatory agencies.

  • Supports quality and fiscal goals for department and institution. Orders routine and special clinic supplies. Maintains supply par levels for each clinic. Ensures procedure and exam rooms are stocked appropriately. Ensures equipment is maintained and working properly. Coordinates efforts toward optimizing patient assistance with billing offices, clinic pods, social workers and university hospital.

  • May monitor protocols, daily cash and TES edit reports, dashboard indicators (co-payment, abandon rates) and daily deposit log.

  • Assists in the process for annual budgets within responsibility area. Reviews budget with leadership. Monitors compliance with budget on a regular basis to forecast future problems. Assists in development of strategies to address budgetary problems. Assists in the process for annual budget and submits within the timeframe established by administration. Orders and monitors supplies and equipment keeping within budgeted dollars and established standards. Monitors actual expenditures on a monthly basis and reports variances. Maintains open communication with employees regarding budget status on a monthly basis.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Ability to enter 4,000 keystrokes per hour

Preferred

Bachelor preferred and at least 18 months of related experience.

Compensation is based on relevant qualifications and experience

Qualifications
Education
  • Associate’s degree in nursing and Eighteen (18) months of related experience required.

  • Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Licenses / Certifications / Registrations
  • Currently licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the Alabama Board of Nursing required.

  • Current CPR certification required or must be obtained within 30 days of employment.

  • ACLS certification preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • The number of direct and indirect reports may vary
