Job description

JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE

The Gas Meter Shop Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations, performance, and compliance of the gas meter shop. This role provides leadership to meter shop personnel, ensures accurate meter measurement and telemetry functionality, and manages programs related to meter sampling, testing, and replacement. The supervisor also supports budgeting, vendor management, procurement, and coordination with engineering and SCADA teams.

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Supervise and coordinate all gas meter shop activities, including meter procurement, testing, calibration, repair, and refurbishment.
  • Oversee meter shop operators, ensuring efficient workflow, adherence to procedures, and achievement of performance targets.
  • Own and manage the meter sampling, testing, and replacement program, ensuring regulatory compliance and system accuracy.
  • Monitor productivity and continuously improve shop processes and turnaround times.
  • Ensure all meters meet required accuracy and quality standards prior to deployment.
  • Monitor and approve QA/QC of telemetry systems and data.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records for testing, inspections, and regulatory compliance.
  • Support audits and ensure adherence to applicable industry standards and company procedures.
  • Manage telemetry inventory, including tracking and lifecycle management of devices.
  • Assist SCADA engineers with configuring modems and communication devices for pressure monitoring systems.
  • Ensure proper functionality and reliability of meter‑related telemetry systems.
  • Promote and enforce all safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and company safety standards.
  • Conduct safety meetings and proactively identify and mitigate workplace hazards.
  • Manage meter shop budget activities, including forecasting and tracking actual spend.
  • Monitor expenditures to ensure alignment with financial targets.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to identify cost‑saving opportunities.
  • Oversee inventory management of meters, parts, telemetry equipment, and shop supplies.
  • Work closely with Supply Chain to track and maintain inventory levels.
  • Ensure timely procurement and availability of required materials.
  • Maintain vendor relationships and service contracts.
  • Coordinate with sourcing specialists to manage procurement activities and contract compliance.
  • Evaluate vendor performance to ensure quality and cost‑effectiveness.
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate meter shop personnel.
  • Track meter asset traceability from initial requisition to field deployment and final asset retirement utilizing asset and work management systems.
  • Ensure employees are properly trained and qualified for assigned tasks.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Minimum education required of the position
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in engineering technology, business, or related field preferred.
  • Able to operate a motor vehicle, including the ability to enter and exit vehicle unassisted.
  • Able to perform on‑site/shop inspections.
  • Able to operate a personal computer, either desktop or laptop.
  • Able to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Able to operate a copy machine, fax machine, calculator, telephone and other miscellaneous office equipment.
  • Able to exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and /or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push or otherwise move objects.

Minimum experience required of the position
  • High school diploma required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in natural gas distribution or gas measurement required.
  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities preferred of the position
  • Strong understanding of gas meter operations, measurement principles, and testing procedures.
  • Familiarity with telemetry systems, SCADA integration, and field communication devices.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulations and standards (AGA, DOT, OSHA).
  • Experience with budgeting, inventory systems, and vendor management.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

Working Conditions

  • Job duties are performed in a normal and clean office/shop environment with normal noise levels.
  • Work is predominately done while standing or sitting.
  • The ability to comprehend, document, calculate, visualize and analyze are required.
  • Able to work daily in all types of weather conditions.
  • Able to work regular hours, with occasional overtime.
  • Able to handle emergency situations, including possible exposure to gaseous atmospheres on occasion.
  • Able to work rotating shifts, if required.
  • Able to respond to emergency calls and/or callouts and occasionally return to work while off duty.
  • Able to wear and operate personal protective equipment, such as respirator, safety glasses, hardhat, gloves, protective footwear and earplugs daily.
  • May be required to remain in the service area during emergency events and assume responsibilities assigned by the company to aide in restoration efforts.
