Responsibilities
Job Summary / Purpose

Supervises laboratory personnel and operations to ensure compliance and quality in accordance with laboratory work processes. Exercises authority over personnel decisions and is responsible for the technical and scientific oversight of the clinical laboratory department.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities
  1. Supervises, coaches, and reviews the performance of laboratory personnel to ensure adherence to relevant policies and ethics.
  2. Oversees designated laboratory day-to-day operations and exercises authority over personnel decisions.
  3. Analyzes and interprets laboratory results in accordance with established laboratory work processes.
  4. Administers laboratory inventories such as supplies, equipment, and consumables.
  5. Selects test methodologies appropriate for clinical use.
  6. Verifies test procedures and establishes laboratory test performance characteristics, including precision and accuracy.
  7. Participates in HHS-approved proficiency testing programs relevant to the services offered.
  8. Establishes and maintains a quality control program, ensuring acceptable levels of analytic performance.
  9. Resolves technical problems and ensures remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from performance standards.
  10. Ensures patient test results are reported only after corrective actions and system validation.
  11. Identifies training needs and ensures staff receive ongoing education and training.
  12. Qualifies and functions as the CLIA-defined Technical Consultant, evaluating staff competency and maintaining testing proficiency.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in biological or chemical sciences as defined by CLIA.

At least five years of experience in a moderate or high-complexity laboratory.

Preferred Education and Experience

One year of supervisory or higher-level experience preferred.

Required Licensure and Certifications

State license requirements vary by location (e.g., CLS:CA, CLS:NV, GS:NV, MT-L:ND, MT-L:TN).

For locations where a license is not required, certification such as MT, CLS, or MLS by ASCP or equivalent is necessary.

Pathology labs require CT or HTL certification, ASCP or equivalent.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Training

Strong leadership, administrative, and communication skills. Knowledge of financial management, HR, equipment, quality management, physician relations, and workflow design. Extensive knowledge of federal and state regulations for compliance.
