Job description

Position Summary

The Laboratory Section Supervisor is responsible for monitoring and participating in all aspects of daily operations in an assigned section.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, with on-call hours

Work Location: Baptist Health, Shelby Medical Center, 1000 1 St N, Alabaster, Alabama 35007

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  1. Provide daily supervision of personnel and reporting of tests.
  2. Monitor workflow, evaluate compliance with service guarantees and quality control requirements.
  3. Work cooperatively with all customers and respond effectively to meet or exceed customer needs. Monitor customer satisfaction and address issues promptly.
  4. Orient and train team members in the department.
  5. Complete performance competency evaluations and coaching plans.
  6. Recognize and provide positive feedback and rewards for performance; address disciplinary actions as needed.
  7. Schedule staff to meet workload requirements while minimizing expenses.
  8. Perform bench responsibilities as needed and regularly scheduled to maintain testing proficiency.
  9. Perform and report routine and special laboratory testing following established policies to ensure high-quality results within timeframes.
  10. Verify results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability.
  11. Perform, evaluate, and document quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.
  12. Monitor test analysis to maintain acceptable levels of performance and take corrective actions when required.
  13. Evaluate team competency, monitor test results, worksheets, quality control records, proficiency testing, and maintenance logs. Recommend new test methodologies and instrumentation to the laboratory manager.
  14. Implement new test methods and procedures under the direction of the laboratory manager and medical director.
  15. Support the manager in maintaining the operational budget within constraints.
  16. Order supplies, monitor inventory, productivity, and testing utilization.
  17. Develop and ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures for test performance, quality control, and maintenance according to regulatory standards.
  18. Monitor workflow and delegate responsibilities to team members.
  19. Communicate regularly with the manager regarding daily operations.
  20. Manage HR functions including hiring, work assignments, coaching, and performance counseling.
  21. Maintain regular, punctual attendance in accordance with policies and standards.
  22. Ensure compliance with all organizational policies and procedures.
Other Related Functions
  1. Understand the roles of all laboratory areas and fulfill team leader responsibilities in other areas as needed.
  2. Participate actively in the laboratory's quality improvement programs and ensure competency in all assigned areas.
  3. Enforce safety and infection control practices.
  4. Maintain confidentiality of patient records and hospital information.
  5. Collaborate with other laboratory sites to ensure consistency and standardization in testing methodologies and procedures.
Qualifications

Education/Training

Graduate from an approved school of medical laboratory technology or an appropriate training facility. Bachelor’s degree in a related science field. Completion of an approved clinical laboratory training internship.

Licensure/Certification

Maintain current supervisor and medical technologist licenses for Alabama.

Experience

At least five (5) years of laboratory experience.

Highly Preferred Experience

Supervisory experience, Point of Care experience (minimum lead tech experience), and at least 5 years as MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist).
