Job summary

Indiana University Health is seeking a Certified Laboratory Supervisor to manage the Microbiology Laboratory's daily operations and staff. The role emphasizes high-quality patient testing, regulatory compliance, and ongoing staff development within a large Indiana health system.

You will lead workflow, oversee equipment and supply inventories, and drive quality assurance, data analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives across the laboratory network.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science or related field.
  • 3–5 years of high-complexity microbiology testing experience.
  • Current national certification (ASCP / AMT / NCA or equivalent).

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily microbiology laboratory operations and staffing.
  • Ensure workflow efficiency and testing demand support.
  • Maintain equipment, materials, and supply inventories.
  • Lead quality control, regulatory compliance, and SOPs.

Position Summary

The Certified Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Microbiology Laboratory, ensuring high-quality patient testing services, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and staff development. This role provides technical, administrative, and leadership support while maintaining laboratory quality standards and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Operations Management
  • Supervise and coordinate daily laboratory operations, staffing, scheduling, and resource utilization.
  • Ensure effective workflow management to support testing demands and operational goals.
  • Oversee laboratory equipment, materials, and supply inventories to maintain uninterrupted service.
  • Assist with laboratory procedures, testing activities, and research projects as needed.
Quality and Regulatory Compliance
  • Develop, implement, and monitor quality control and quality assurance procedures.
  • Ensure accurate and complete laboratory documentation and recordkeeping.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, accreditation, and institutional laboratory regulations and standards.
  • Support the development and maintenance of laboratory policies, procedures, and standard operating protocols.
Personnel Leadership and Development
  • Supervise, train, mentor, and monitor laboratory personnel.
  • Assign and evaluate work responsibilities to ensure productivity and quality outcomes.
  • Provide technical guidance and support for staff members.
  • Promote professional growth, competency development, and adherence to best practices.
Data Analysis and Reporting
  • Collect, review, and analyze operational and quality-related laboratory data.
  • Prepare routine and special reports, analyses, and performance summaries.
  • Utilize data to support decision-making, quality improvement initiatives, and operational planning.
Technical Expertise and Continuous Improvement
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for laboratory instrumentation and testing processes.
  • Stay current with emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in microbiology and laboratory medicine.
  • Engage with professional organizations, scientific publications, and subject matter experts to support ongoing learning and innovation.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science, Chemical Science, Physical Science, Biological Science
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of training and/or experience performing high-complexity testing within the microbiology specialty.
  • Current certification through one of the following ASCP / AMT / NCA or Equivalent nationally recognized certification
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemical Science, Physical Science, Biological Science.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in personnel management, coaching, and performance improvement.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Extensive computer proficiency and experience with laboratory information systems and software applications.
  • Thorough understanding of laboratory testing methodologies and standard operating procedures.
  • Strong equipment troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal laboratory regulations.
  • Effective communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
Work Environment
  • Full-time, day-shift position.
  • Serves within one of Indiana's largest and most comprehensive clinical laboratory systems.
  • Supports a high-volume testing environment operating 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Contributes to a laboratory network performing more than 19 million tests annually and providing services to healthcare organizations throughout Indiana and across the United States.
