Job Description And Duties

Under general direction of the Supervisor II Workforce Development Branch, Department of Developmental Services (Department), the Supervisor I supports statewide Workforce Development Initiatives supporting the developmental disabilities services system serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The position will oversee program coordination and consultation in the research, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of effective instruction for trainings related to Department Workforce Development Initiatives for direct service professionals (DSPs) who provide services and supports for individuals with IDD in California. The position will meet and obtain input from internal and external partners on curriculum and learning platforms to implement current and future Workforce Development Initiatives and related programs and to identify training needs and gaps for future program development.

Effective July 1, 2025, State employees are subject to a salary reduction of three percent in exchange for five hours per month of the Personal Leave.

Working Conditions

Under Government Code 14200, this position is a hybrid, in-office/telework position, and may be subject to change. Incumbent can be required to report to the office, or any designated location at any time. Telework agreements can be modified and/or cancelled at any time. All commute expenses to the reporting location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Pursuant to California Government Code requirements, candidates must be residents of the State of California at the time of appointment.

This position requires lawful authorization to work in the United States. The Department does not sponsor employment visas for this position.

Occasional daytime and overnight statewide travel may be required.

Department Information

The California Department of Developmental Services (Department) is the agency through which the State of California provides services and supports to individuals with developmental disabilities.

These disabilities include intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism and related conditions. Services are provided through state-operated developmental centers and community facilities, and contracts with 21 nonprofit regional centers. The regional centers serve as a local resource to help find and access the services and supports available to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

The Department Is Located In a Modern, Sustainable And Innovative Office Building At 1215 O Street, Sacramento, California. Some Amenities Of The Building Include:

  • Describe your experience as a supervisor developing and maintaining effective working relationships with team members, governmental representatives at various levels, members of the public, and community partners. Highlight how you establish trust, foster collaboration, and maintain professionalism across diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Describe your experience supervising and managing complex projects from initiation through completion. Include specific examples of project management tools or methods you used, how you developed and monitored work plans at a supervisory level, and the steps you took to ensure project goals, timelines, and deliverables were successfully achieved.

  • Knowledge of: Principles and methods of program evaluation, training, facilitation, and group leadership. Training resources and equipment. Principles of effective communication. Principles of public administration. The Lanterman Act and programs, policies, and activities of the developmental disabilities services system and Department' goals and objectives. Computer hardware and software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, InDesign and Outlook. Planning, policy and systems/management analysis and program evaluation. Project management principles, including work plan development and budgeting. The processes of community and group interaction in developmental disabilities planning procedures. Current trends and promising practices in developmental disabilities.
  • Ability to: Plan, organize, direct, conduct, and evaluate training programs. Analyze program data and situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. Communicate effectively. Gain the confidence and support of top-level administrators. Develop cooperative working relationships with representatives of all levels of government and community partners. Manage multiple projects in order to meet Department goals and objectives. Work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and develop and maintain cooperative and harmonious relationships with regional centers and other state agencies, peers, the public, and others. Apply quality management principles and techniques.
