Job summary

Great River Health seeks an experienced House Supervisor (RN) to coordinate activities across nursing units and departments during off-hours. This role provides leadership, supervises staff, and ensures compliance with regulatory standards while supporting the hospital’s mission and values.

The supervisor will round on units, collaborate with physicians, and act as incident commander during emergencies, ensuring high-quality patient care and efficient hospital operations.

Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree (AA) in Nursing (ADN) Required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS) or BSN preferred.
  • RN license in Iowa required upon hire.
  • 4-6 years nursing practice preferred.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Preference: critical care experience.
  • Proficiency in clinical decision making and critical thinking.
  • Proficiency in MS Outlook, Word and Excel preferred.
  • Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • ACLS within 180 days required.
  • BLS within 180 days required.
  • PALS within 180 days required.
  • NIHSS Certification within 180 days required.
  • TNCC within 1 year preferred.

  • Observe and assess patients to identify customer service needs.
  • Communicate shift activities to Nursing Leadership via House Supervisor Report.
  • Collaborate with leaders to resolve conflicts and concerns.
  • Maintain content for all emergency management plans.
  • Serve as staffing office specialist in absence of staffing office specialist.

Job Description

A Brief Overview The House Supervisor is a competent registered nurse who assumes responsibility for the coordination and direction of activities across nursing units and other departments in the absence of the Nursing Director and Administration. This role represents nursing leadership by exhibiting professionalism and supporting the hospital's mission, vision, and values.The House Supervisor provides oversight of staff delivering general nursing care, working independently while also fostering teamwork and collaboration. This position delivers high-quality nursing services to a broad range of customers, including patients, employees, administration, management, physicians, and visitors.Key accountabilities include maintaining current knowledge of regulatory standards and evidence-based practices, ensuring compliance, rounding frequently on all nursing units, and serving as the patient placement officer in the absence of a patient placement officer. During off-hours, the House Supervisor coordinates hospital operations, including acting as incident command center at the start of emergency situations, scheduling surgeries, activating the on-call surgical team, obtaining necessary supplies from materials management, and responding to all codes and rapid responses. In the absence of the staffing office, the House Supervisor fulfills that role as well.Additionally, the House Supervisor actively supports and participates in shared governance, demonstrating leadership, accountability, and a commitment to continuous improvement in patient care and hospital operations.

What you will do

  • Act as the bed placement officer in the absence of a bed placement officer.
  • Act as the Incident Commander at the start of all emergency management plans.
  • Maintain departmental policies, procedures, objectives, or infection control standards.
  • Observe, interview, and assess patients to identify customer service needs - Leadership rounding.
  • Communicate shift activities to Nursing Leadership via the House Supervisor Report.
  • Collaborate with other leaders, when appropriate, to resolve conflicts, and patient/family concerns.
  • Maintain proficiency of content for all emergency management plans.
  • Acts as the staffing office specialist in the absence of a staffing office specialist.
Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree (AA) in Nursing (ADN) Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS) Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or another related field Preferred
  • 4-6 years experience in nursing practice Preferred
  • Prefer previous supervisory experience Preferred
  • Prefer critical care experience Preferred
  • Proficiency in clinical decision making and critical thinking skills
  • Proficiency in computer skills (MS Outlook, Word, and Excel) preferred
  • Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support - American Heart Association within 180 Days Required
  • Child Abuse Iowa Mandatory Reporter - Iowa Department of Human Services within 180 Days Required
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association within 180 Days Required
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support - American Heart Association within 180 Days Required
  • Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter - Iowa Department of Human Services within 180 Days Required
  • NIHSS Certification - Apex Innovations within 180 Days Required
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course TNCC - Emergency Nurses Association within 1 Year Preferred
  • Registered Nurse Iowa Board of Nursing (IBON) (United States of America) Upon Hire Required
