JOB DESCRIPTION

Under direction of the Fleet Services Manager, the Fleet Services Supervisor is responsible for supervising personnel engaged in the service and repair of vehicles and other equipment including welding repairs, tire work, body and paint work. The Fleet Service Supervisor prioritizes work based on the needs of the Authority and provides direction and technical assistance to fleet technicians and others including diagnosing problems and troubleshooting. This position is responsible for interacting with parts and stores personnel and maintaining communication with vendors regarding their products and applicability to job needs. The Supervisor authorizes the purchase of parts used in repair and over-haul jobs, monitors the status of repair work for quality and efficient turnaround time, and prepares and reports on equipment status, work progress, etc.

The Fleet Services Supervisor provides recommendations on vehicle replacements and oversight of the safe working conditions of the facility. This position has direct responsibility for assigning, prioritizing, monitoring, and the evaluation of subordinate staff, counseling fleet staff members and recommending corrective action or discipline when necessary.

Accountabilities and Essential Functions [1]

• Supervise the maintenance and repair of buses and other automotive equipment, as well as the maintenance, repair, rebuilding and painting of all vehicles and accessories including fare meters, upholstered interiors, seats, glass installation, electronics, and air conditioning.
• Prepare daily schedules of buses available for limited or full service as well as equipment to be held for servicing.
• Assist in the preparation of specifications for vehicles, equipment, and tooling used in repair and maintenance, and supervise the manufacture and installation of all new operating and maintenance equipment.
• Assist Fleet Services Technicians engaged in maintenance operations and receive verbal and written reports from Motor Coach Operators concerning vehicle defects and general performance.
• Inspect works-in-progress and review service records, work orders, parts requisitions and man-hour reports.
• Respond and make prompt decisions on incoming emergency calls.

Supervise and assign activities for all subordinate personnel, maintaining daily communication with Fleet Services Technicians, Technician Teams, and all subordinate specialists

• Receive work requests and assign work according to priority and facilities available.
• Train and assist subordinates in repair and installation procedures.
• Confer with subordinate Fleet Services Technicians regarding workload capacity and technical maintenance matters.
• Supervise the performance of Fleet Services Technicians, providing coaching and instruction when appropriate.

Monitor and enforce Safety Standards of the organization, including those found in the Personnel Procedures Manual

• Lead the daily inspection of all activities to ensure vehicles, equipment, and electronic components are being maintained and used at established standards.
• Read, understand, and use shop manuals, diagnostic software applications and electrical schematics.

Examine equipment in the field and shop, approve replacements and major repairs, and recommend the purchase of parts and service equipment

• Prepare cost estimates on work orders and accident repairs. Assess repairs being performed and assure all warranty is being claimed.
• Oversee road testing of equipment and provide approval for completed work.

Maintain open communications with immediate supervisors and subordinates

• Attend and perform as a key facilitator at departmental team meetings. Recommend and suggest modifications to improve service, procedures, safety and cost reductions within the department.
• Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work, and work collaboratively to provide quality customer service.
• Retrieve and/or enter, analyze and/or use maintenance data from an automated Maintenance Management Information System.
• Attend professional conferences and seminars to keep current in the profession. Disseminate pertinent information to other teams within the Fleet Services Department.

• Associates Degree (two-year program) in Applied Sciences or related field, or an equivalent combination of formal training program and experience.
• Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL); ASE Certifications in bus repair H8/H4/H5/H7; A/C 609 Certification; Ford Start Certifications; Master ASE Certification preferable.
• Minimum of 5 years or more experience required in vehicle maintenance including fleet preventative maintenance and repair of heavy-duty vehicles.
• Minimum of 2 years direct supervisory experience; supervisory experience in a unionized environment preferred.
• Demonstrated strength in organizational skills with the ability to analyze, recommend, and implement solutions to complex operational problems and issues.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Ability to perform as an effective team player and operate without close supervision.
