Job summary

AeroVironment, Inc. in Moorpark, CA is seeking a Supervisor, Designing and Drafting to lead a group of engineers in producing drawings, ECNs, BOMs, and related documentation for aerospace programs.

The role focuses on assigning resources, ensuring scope, cost, and schedule adherence, and upholding drafting standards and GD&T practices while mentoring staff and driving continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in the creation, review, and change management of engineering drawings and related documentation.
  • Experience in a Team Leadership role.
  • In-depth knowledge of ASME Y14.100, Y14.5 and related standards.
  • Experience with aerospace configuration management practices.
  • Experience with multiple drawing types (machined, sheet metal, PCB, weldments, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Assigns drafting resources to projects and resolves group conflicts.
  • Defines scope and work estimates for projects.
  • Ensures project progress, resolves issues, and escalates as needed.
  • Supports drawing releases and revisions across groups.
  • Maintains drafting standards and processes for quality output.
  • Leads continuous improvement initiatives for efficiency.
  • Manages engineering product data management system (e.g., SolidWorks EPDM).
  • Recruits, mentors, and trains group personnel; conducts performance reviews.

Summary

The Supervisor, Designing and Drafting , manages a group of team members to ensure the needs and objectives of the Engineering Department are provided. This group assists a team of engineering staff to create and process engineering drawings, Engineering Change Orders, bills of materials, and other related engineering documentation.

Position Responsibilities
  • Assigns drafting resources to projects or tasks, and reconciles any group resource conflicts
  • Helps define scope of work and work estimates for projects
  • Helps assure project progress (technical, cost & schedule), resolves technical issues, and escalates when needed
  • Supports the Production, Product Engineering, and Configuration Management Groups with processing drawing releases and revisions
  • Ensures the integrity and quality of the Group’s output by establishing, maintaining, and enforcing Drafting Group standards, processes & procedures
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement in group procedures, and leads initiatives aimed at continual improvement in efficiency & effectiveness of the group
  • Responsible for the implementation, maintenance, administration, and training of the engineering product data management system (e.g. SolidWorks EPDM)
  • Identifies new resource requirements, recruits, and interviews & hires new employees. Mentors, develops and trains group personnel. Provides training of group and engineering personnel in drafting and GD&T best practices
  • Evaluates staff performance, leads regular performance reviews, defines goals for Group in alignment with corporate goals, communicates areas for improvement/positive enforcement, and provides recommendations for compensation & promotions
  • Other duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience)
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent is required
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in the creation, review, and change management of engineering drawings and other technical documentation
  • Experienced in a Team Leadership role
  • Experienced in the creation and review of engineering drawings, and in-depth knowledge of ASME Y14.100 Engineering Drawing Practices, Y14.5 Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and other applicable ASME Y14 series standards
  • Experienced in the application of aerospace industry configuration management practices
  • Experienced with the following types of drawings: machined parts drawings, composite parts drawings, plastic injection molded part drawings, sheet metal fabrication drawings, source control drawings, specification control drawings, printed circuit board fabrication & assembly drawings, wire assembly drawings, schematics, mechanical assembly drawings, and weldment drawings
Other Qualifications & Desired Competencies
  • Vocational and/or Associate’s degree in relevant discipline is preferred
  • Supervisory experience of engineering or drafting personnel preferred
  • Proficiency in the use of engineering CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred) as well as office productivity tools such as MS Office
  • Experience with SolidWorks EPDM is preferred
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal, leadership and communication (verbal & written) skills

The salary range for this role is:

$98,000 - $149,250

AeroVironment considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the location, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, education/training, and key skills.
