Job description

Supervisor for Urinalysis, Serology, Coagulation. Utilizes the lab computer for daily work, verifies completion of work by various computer programs, works in a generalist capacity, adheres to standard lab practices, and works in all sections of the fast‑paced laboratory. Workload includes stat and ER testing, routine AM testing in all sections, including Blood Bank and limited Microbiology.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise and perform necessary quality control procedures, maintain quality control records, and troubleshoot instrumentation problems.
  • As a specialist, perform all routine procedures in one or more clinical laboratory sections; as a float, perform all routine procedures ensuring 100% accuracy and accordance with procedure limits and turnaround times.
  • Serve as a supervisor in Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Waived Testing, Chemistry, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Serology, send‑outs, computer, evening/night shift, and perform all supervisor functions in a timely manner.
  • Act as a technical expert in your specialty, review and document CAP survey results, evaluate equipment needs, ensure staff scheduling, serve as a resource for staff and physicians, perform projects directed by the Laboratory Director, train backup staff for key functions, assist the Laboratory Director in absence, and oversee the department when designated as In‑Charge CLS.
  • Maintain 100% compliance with QC protocols, notify the Director of significant irregularities, keep records accurate, submit peer review programs on time, and monitor QC trends.
  • Select, monitor, and order supplies, maintain inventory at optimal levels, minimize emergency orders, store supplies properly, and keep accurate receipt and testing records.
  • Perform instrumentation maintenance, keep calibration current, train staff, review maintenance records, and monitor instrument trend problems.
  • Participate in training new employees, conduct objective evaluations, provide counseling, and adjust training to skill levels.
  • Troubleshoot technical and other problems using the hotline and instrument manuals, correcting problems promptly.
  • Perform other clinical and clerical duties as needed, including phlebotomy for patients of all ages and clerical functions at the reception area.
  • Use laboratory computer for daily work, familiarize with all pertinent computer procedures, and verify that all assigned work is completed reliably.
  • Communicate with nursing and other hospital personnel regarding laboratory procedures and results in a clear, courteous, and professional manner, and take a leadership role in problem solving with nursing, physicians, and other team members.
  • Perform all functions of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist across all laboratory areas and all shifts, answering questions and leading in all areas including computers and front office.
  • Research, evaluate, and develop procedures for new methods, document changes, prepare written policies, and train staff on new methods.
  • Perform additional duties upon request or as determined by management, follow hospital policies, maintain professional conduct, participate in group projects, communicate effectively with supervisors, maintain confidentiality, resolve problems, project a positive professional image, attend meetings, and complete assigned work on time.
  • Conduct professional interactions with management, patients, family, and staff, maintain phone protocol, display a cheerful attitude, and ensure positive guest relations.
  • Complete annual safety updates, orientation, in‑service programs, maintain licensure/certification, and achieve professional growth.
  • Strive to understand and meet patient/customer needs, report errors and inefficiencies to management, develop innovative solutions, control costs, maximize efficiency, measure progress against quality goals.
Qualifications
  • Minimum education: College graduate with Medical Technology internship.
  • Minimum experience: 2 years acute hospital experience.
  • Required certification: CA Licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
