Supervisor Clinical Engineering

Job Category: Management | Schedule: Full time | Shift: 1 - Day Shift

SUMMARY:

Functions as a primary point of contact for the Clinical Engineering Department. Supervises the repair and maintenance activities performed by Clinical Engineering staff. Provides on-site leadership for all components of the medial equipment management program. Participates in the development of departmental continuous quality improvement initiatives. Helps to ensure patient safety by supporting proper use, application and operational performance of patient care equipment. Acts as a technical resource for Clinical Engineering staff for repair and maintenance activities on select equipment and systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Develop work schedules for all staff technicians and make adjustments as needed to accommodate changing workloads.
  • Assists with the management of the computerized maintenance management system TMS.
  • Evaluate staff productivity, efficiency and other work quality metrics.
  • Follows established departmental guidelines regarding PM and repair documentation and completion.
  • Audits work completed by in-house staff and takes corrective action when necessary.
  • Assists with staff performance evaluations and decisions regarding merit increases and promotions.
  • Participates in interviewing potential new hires and assists with making hiring decisions.
  • Initiates disciplinary actions and counsels employees when required.
  • Ensures all resources are available to staff members as needed to allow them to perform the maintenance and repair of medical equipment and systems.
  • Provide training to biomedical technicians as appropriate.
  • Ensure service requests are being handled in a timely manner.
  • Assist with monitoring monthly expenditures and works to control medical equipment expenses.
  • Lead or participate in projects where Clinical Engineering representation is needed.
  • Assists with service contact management, department best practices and policy and Standard Work development.
  • May be required to perform safety testing, preventative maintenance and complex repairs on biomedical equipment.
  • Collaborates with other support entities (e.g., Information Services, Facilites and/or EVS to develop support plans for devices or systems that require multi-disciplinary support.
  • Understands and complies with Joint Commission and other applicable standards and regulations.
  • Exhibits a very high level of communication, customer service, and an ability to interact successfully with hospital staff.
  • Exhibits excellence in process, accuracy and compliance.
  • Leads efforts in process improvement including investigating root cause and implementing appropriate countermeasures for problems in order to improve service and reduce cost where feasible.
  • Adheres to TMCH organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values policies and standards.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
  • Associate’s Degree or Technical School Degree is required.
  • Relevant military experience may substitute for lack of education.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Five (5) years’ experience as a Biomedical Technician with increasing knowledge and complexity of assignments.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office applications and ability to develop and maintain spreadsheets.
  • Familiar with computer systems used to track and manage medical device inventory.
  • Prior computer networking knowledge or experience is preferred.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION:
  • CBET preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of the best practices for the installation, calibration, inspection, preventive maintenance, and repairs of biomedical and related technical equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic biomedical equipment, which includes but is not limited to: Doppler Blood Flow devices, sphygmomanometers, centrifuges, digital thermometers, digital scales, some infusion devices, and exercise equipment including treadmills.
  • Skill in performing preventative maintenance and repairs to mechanical and electrical biomedical equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to listen and accurately interpret others' communication or instructions to take appropriate action.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to calculate figures and compute rate, ratio, and percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs; ability to apply basic algebraic concepts.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
