The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is seeking a Supervisor, Bus Maintenance. This is an Essential Personnel position at the supervisory, technical and administrative level of work. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: planning, coordinating, and forecasting personnel for servicing MTA buses and other vehicles; employee tracking; distribution of random drug and alcohol testing; labor relations; initiating new procedures and ideas; issuing disciplinary actions; and executing provisions of MTA rules, regulations, policies, and labor contracts.

Bus Maintenance Supervisors directly supervise A, B, and C Repairpersons, and Cleaners. They receive general supervision from a Bus Maintenance Superintendent or other designated officials and are expected to carry assignments through completion independently. While existing rules, regulations, policies, and procedures govern the work, Bus Maintenance Supervisors exercise considerable judgment in interpreting and applying them to unusual or non-standard situations.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise daily bus maintenance activities to meet operational line requirements.
  • Directly supervise A, B, and C Repairpersons, Cleaners, and Maintenance Control Clerks.
  • Conduct daily shift meetings and provide instruction regarding shop rules, safety procedures, and operational expectations.
  • Review and update daily activity reports and preventive maintenance schedules using maintenance management systems (e.g., Maximo).
  • Coordinate with the Operations Control Center regarding service interruptions and road calls.
  • Review road call reports and ensure timely resolution.
  • Monitor workforce attendance and productivity, and address manpower allocation to balance line requirements and preventive maintenance completion.
  • Issue disciplinary actions in accordance with MTA policies and applicable labor contracts.

Qualifications

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years in the repair, maintenance, and inspection of heavy-duty automotive vehicles and equipment. *Two (2) years of supervisory or lead experience overseeing staff, assigning and reviewing work, providing direction and guidance, and ensuring compliance with organizational policies and procedures.

Notes:

  1. Additional experience may be substituted for up to four years of the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  2. Additional technical or vocational training may be substituted for up to two years of the experience requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Special Requirements
  1. Employees are subject to twenty-four (24) hour call‑in during special or weather events, emergency situations, or as deemed necessary.
  2. Work is usually performed in a vehicle garage setting which may be hazardous.
  3. Bus Maintenance Supervisors may be required to travel and work outdoors at various locations throughout the MTA service area, in all types of weather conditions.
  4. Supervisors are required to wear daily protective clothing and equipment (e.g., uniforms, safety shoes, safety glasses, safety vest); some assignments may require additional protective clothing or equipment.
  5. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations 49 and Federal Transit Administration Alcohol Testing Rules.
Licenses & Certifications

Employment requires a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in the State of Maryland.

Safety and Enforcement

Managers should foster a positive safety culture by leading with integrity and establishing departmental safety practices and procedures for all employees. They must attend and participate in safety meetings; adhere to and enforce all safety rules, policies, regulations, and personal protective equipment requirements; ensure employees are properly trained and provided with personal protective equipment; report hazards, unsafe acts, near misses, injuries, and accidents immediately to the Office of Safety; and collaborate to mitigate reported hazards in a timely manner. Conduct safety risk assessments and/or job hazard analyses as needed.
