Job summary

Boston Medical Center seeks a Breast Imaging Supervisor to provide technical, operational and administrative leadership across the department. You will oversee daily activities, optimize workflows, and collaborate with the Radiology Director to enhance patient care and staff performance.

The role requires an Associate’s degree and 8 years of mammography experience with at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity, plus valid radiologic licenses and BLS.

Qualifications

  • Licensure and certification requirements include MA DPH Radiologic Technologist Radiography license and Mammography license, ARRT certifications, and BLS.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and supervise day-to-day activities of the Breast Imaging Department to ensure high quality service and efficiency.
  • Lead staff across all Breast Imaging modalities for assigned shifts and ensure policy compliance.
  • Assist with interviews and hiring recommendations for candidates.
  • Provide coaching, performance evaluations and staff support.
  • Maintain documentation for staff qualifications, licenses, registrations and CE.
  • Ensure accurate payroll and staff scheduling aligned with budget and patient care needs.
  • Manage patient scheduling and workflow to optimize efficiency and productivity.
  • Collaborate with Radiology Director to improve workflows, staffing and patient experience.
  • Cross-train mammography and ultrasound techs and cover other departments as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professional communication with patients and staff.

Job description

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Radiology Director, the Breast Imaging Supervisor provides technical, operational and administrative leadership to the department. The primary duty is to supervise all aspects of the day‑to‑day operations and to assist in improving and implementing workflows, policies and procedures in conjunction with the Radiology Director and Section Chief of Breast Imaging.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Monitor and maintain daily activities related to the technical and operational aspects of the department, ensuring a high quality, efficient, customer‑focused and properly functioning Breast Imaging Department.
  • Lead employees in all Breast Imaging modalities for assigned shifts, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Assist with interviews and recommend candidates for hiring.
  • Orient, evaluate performance and provide counseling and support to staff.
  • Maintain all required documentation related to staff qualifications, licenses, registrations, and continuing education.
  • Ensure accurate payroll activity.
  • Day‑to‑day staffing and allocation of technologists and other staff to departmental areas, balancing patient care, budget, staffing and department and hospital needs.
  • Monitor and adjust the breast imaging workflow to ensure operational efficiency and staff productivity.
  • Manage the department patient schedule, making modifications to ensure operational efficiency and staff productivity.
  • Assist in preparing for monthly staff meetings.
  • Monitor performance and compliance with departmental procedures and policies.
  • Adhere to safety standards set by the Radiology department, BMC and regulatory and accreditation agencies.
  • Collaborate closely with the Radiology Director to improve workflow, staffing, patient schedule, patient experience, department budgets, technologist training and initiatives.
  • Work cooperatively with the healthcare delivery team and staff to ensure efficient and effective care.
  • Perform other Mammographic Technologist tasks, including cross‑training and covering other departments as required.
  • Provide service and care to patients of all ages and notify personnel when patients with special needs are present.
  • Prepare patients for exams, ensuring comfort and modesty at all times.
  • Set up equipment and use proper technique and exposure factors.
  • Notify the Radiology Director of equipment problems and assist with service requests.
  • Follow all radiation safety procedures and maintain compliance with annual radiation safety briefings or seminars.
  • Monitor patient conditions and take appropriate actions for assistance or further monitoring.
  • Ensure timely completion of follow‑up studies, proper billing and supply codes, and accurate PACS/RIS data entry.
  • Maintain proper documentation for requisitions, procedures, billing and demographic data.
  • Train mammography and ultrasound techs on resolving cases.
  • Handle patient complaints, perform service recovery and ensure patient satisfaction.
  • Respond to urgent add‑on requests for services professionally.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and keep staff discussions around patients to a minimum.
  • Communicate with patients, visitors, physicians, fellow employees and other staff courteously and professionally.
  • Manage Breast Imaging supply management.
  • Lead and maintain the FDA‑enforced quality assurance program with the Radiology Director and Section Chief of Breast Imaging.
  • Assist in developing and participating in the department’s Quality Assurance program.
Other Duties
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Job Requirements
Education & Experience

Requires an Associate’s degree and 8 years of mammography experience with at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required
  • Current Massachusetts DPH Radiologic Technologist Radiography (Full/General) license and Mammography license.
  • Current ARRT registered certification in Radiography with RT(R) designation and Mammography with RT(M) designation.
  • Current BLS certification.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective patient interaction and staff leadership.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to adapt to change.
  • Extensive knowledge of breast anatomy and pathology preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Compensation

Salary range: $39.90 – $57.93 per hour. This estimate is based on minimum job qualifications and takes into account education, experience, skills, and certifications. Additional compensation may include benefits such as medical, dental, vision, pharmacy, discretionary annual bonuses, merit increases, Flexible Spending Accounts, 403(b) savings matches, paid time off, and career advancement opportunities.
