Job summary

California Department of State Hospitals – Atascadero seeks a Supervising Registered Nurse (Safety) for the Nursing Officer of the Day in San Luis Obispo County. The role directs staffing, ensures coverage, and leads in critical situations.

Responsibilities

• Schedule nursing staff in the Nursing Officer of the Day office to meet coverage standards and review overtime.
• Adjust regular schedules to provide leadership in NOD during critical situations.
• Ensure performance standards per hospital policy and EEO requirements through annual evaluations.
• Evaluate and monitor quality of care and intervene in patient behavior that could cause harm or escape attempts.
• Apply Trauma Informed Care, including containment, lifting, restraints, and emergency responses.
• Respond to emergency behavioral/medical situations and assist with restraints/seclusion as needed.
• Assist staff in assessing and authorizing restraints and seclusion; follow infection control procedures.

Job Description And Duties

The Supervising Registered Nurse (Safety) will be directed by the Coordinator of Nursing Services (Nurse Administrator) in Central Nursing Services and Assistant Coordinator of Nursing Services at the Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:

• Schedule nursing staff in the Nursing Officer of the Day (NOD) office to meet standards of coverage. Review staff overtime and use of unscheduled time off, audits for patterns and trends and provides recommendations for improvement and/or initiates corrective action.
• Adjusts regular schedule in order to provide leadership and supervision in NOD periodically and during critical situations or whenever directed by the Nurse Administrator.
• Takes an active role in implementing operations to meet departmental and hospital Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) standards. Assure performance standards are met, as required by hospital policy and relevant State law, through the annual performance evaluation process.
• Evaluating and monitoring the quality of care provided; observing and intervening in patient behavior that may injure people, damage property or signal impending escape attempts.
• Applies and demonstrates knowledge of Trauma Informed Care (TIC), that includes patient containment, heavy lifting, applying restraints, and responding to emergency situations throughout the hospital.
• Responds and participates in emergency behavioral/medical situations.
• Assist staff in assessing and authorizing Restraints and Seclusion, giving first aid and CPR, and following infection control procedures as needed.
