Job summary

State University of New York Upstate Medical University is seeking a Working Supervisor for Environmental Services at the Downtown Campus to oversee EVS staff responsible for cleanliness, sanitization, and maintenance of patient care areas and facilities.

You will assign and train staff, conduct inspections, monitor work quality, respond to concerns, manage work orders, handle regulated medical waste, perform UV disinfection, and coordinate with leadership to ensure infection control and safety

Qualifications

• Two years of satisfactory full-time experience in the custodial care or cleaning of buildings, offices, or institutional residences, with at least one year in a supervisory role.
• NYS Department of Civil Service Eligible List or eligible for transfer, or Promotional: one year of permanent competitive, non-competitive, labor, or 55-b/55-c service in the Janitor title.
• Open competitive (Non-competitive, NY HELPS) qualifications require two years of custodial care experience, including one year at supervisory level.

Job Summary:

Serve as a working supervisor in a hospital setting, overseeing Environmental Services staff while ensuring the cleanliness, sanitization, and maintenance of patient care areas and hospital facilities. Responsibilities include assigning staff, conducting inspections, training and retraining employees, monitoring work quality, responding to service concerns, and ensuring compliance with infection control, safety, and regulatory standards. Additional duties include completing work orders, handling regulated medical waste (RMW), performing UV disinfection procedures, performing special cleaning projects, and serving as a liaison between frontline staff and leadership.

Qualified candidates must possess strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Floor care experience and knowledge of healthcare environmental services and infection prevention practices are preferred. Must be able to perform physical duties including standing, walking, bending, lifting, and climbing ladders for extended periods.

100% Supervising Janitor, 7:00am-3:30pm rotating pass days, weekends, and holidays. Located at the Downtown Campus.
