Job description
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To establish and maintain standards; supervise staff; and plan, organize, and direct a hospital wide infection control program for the monitoring, detection, and prevention of nosocomial and non-nosocomial; and to do related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision and direction of the Physician Infectious Disease Specialist and the Chief of Medicine and Clinical Services.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Directs and supervises infection control and central supply professional and technical staff. Evaluates staff in the areas of performance and competence.To establish infection control outcomes and goals in collaboration with the Physician Infectious Disease Specialist and the hospital wide Infection Control Committee.

To direct and supervise the Eleanor Slater Hospital Infection Control Program.

To develop and coordinate implementation of infection control policies, procedures, and standards.

To establish and update infection control manuals.

To monitor hospital standards and insure compliance for regulatory agencies (e.g. Joint Committee on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations, Health Department, Center for Disease Control, etc.).

To report to the Physician Infectious Disease Specialist and the Chief of Medicine and Clinical Services and the Hospital wide Infection Control Committee.

To initiate epidemiological investigations of all clusters of infection and to implement monitoring and control measures.

To detect, review, and record nosocomial and non-nosocomial infections on a systematic and current basis.

To assist in the development and/or implementation of quality improvement measures in the area of infection control.

To monitor infection control standards encompassing both patient care and employee health services.

To identify interdepartmental issues affecting infection control and facilitate appropriate measures.

To participate in patient care product analysis and selection to insure quality.

To assist with infection control educational/in-service programs for all new employees and with annual in services.

To supervise and direct the Central Supply function and staff.

To serve as an infection control consultant for all Eleanor Slater Hospital departments.

To participate on other Eleanor Slater Hospital committees as needed.

To maintain a working relationship with the Employee Health Clinic, with emphasis on employee exposure to communicable diseases, infection, community personnel outbreaks, and occupational exposure to blood and body fluids.

To maintain current professional expertise.

To perform other related duties.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A thorough knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices and techniques and skill in their application to a hospital infection control program; a working knowledge of microbiology and epidemiology; a working knowledge of the aseptic procedures needed to prevent infections; the ability to compile and present special and recurring statistical and narrative reports; the ability to provide formal and informal training programs; knowledge of CEDC and Occupational Safety and Health Administration surveillance, prevention and control of infection standards; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, professional associates and with public and private health care agencies and related knowledge, skills, abilities and capacities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education: Bachelors Degree graduate from an accredited school of Nursing; and
Experience: Employment in a hospital setting as a Registered Nurse and experience in coordinating a comprehensive program of infection control.
Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must meet nursing registration requirements consistent with Rhode Island Law and regulations and must maintain such registration as a condition of employment. Must successfully complete a one-week long basic training course (confirmed by Association for Professionals in Infectious Control and Epidemeology) on the principles and practices of infection control, no later that completion of the probationary period; and must maintain licensure certification or registration as a condition of employment.
