Supervising Attorney, Criminal Trials (Staten Island)

Position Description

The Legal Aid Society, the largest social justice public interest law firm in New York City, has an immediate opening for a dedicated and passionate Supervising Attorney in our Criminal Defense Practice’s Trial Division in the Richmond County office. The CDP Trial Division is the primary public defender in New York City, providing holistic, client-centered representation to individuals facing misdemeanor, felony, and homicide charges.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. General Responsibilities and Trial Office Support:
  • Ensure high-quality, zealous representation to clients.
  • Train, mentor, and coach interdisciplinary teams of attorneys, paralegals, and investigators.
  • Work closely with social workers.
  • Observe hearings and trials, train new lawyers and law students, second chair hearings and trials, and evaluate client services.
  • Manage a reduced caseload and work with newer attorneys as second seats.
  • Create and promote a diverse and inclusive workplace culture.
  • Team Development and Supervision:
    • Schedule employee hours, assign work, approve time off and remote work requests.
    • Participate in management meetings and trainings.
    • Support equity and inclusion in supervision practices.
    • Supervise staff performance, provide feedback, coaching, and disciplinary actions as needed.
    • Identify and facilitate training and development opportunities.
    • Resolve employee conflicts and address union concerns with HR guidance.
    • Lead organizational and cultural change initiatives.
  • Professional Development and Other Duties:
    • Engage in continuous professional development.
    • Learn about and support inclusive workplace behaviors.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    Salary and Benefits

    Salary Range: $99,444 - $163,507. The actual salary may vary based on experience and other factors. The Legal Aid Society offers comprehensive benefits including health insurance, paid leave, disability, and life insurance. Employees may also qualify for loan forgiveness programs such as PSLF and state-specific assistance.
