Job summary

The Beaver Excavating Co. is seeking a Superintendent to direct, coordinate, and complete projects across Southern Ohio job sites. You will supervise field crews, foremen, and subcontractors to ensure safety, schedule, and profitability while maintaining quality standards.

You will plan and direct crew scheduling, monitor project progress, participate in meetings, and mentor staff. Strong communication, organization, and plan-reading skills are essential, along with OSHA 30 and CPR certification.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years in direct field work, preferably in management/foremen level.
  • Expertise in plan reading, planning and understanding of project specifications.
  • Prior training in office operations and procedures.
  • 30 Hour OSHA certification and First aid/CPR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Directs crew workers and subcontractors to meet safety, schedule and profitability goals.
  • Plans, coordinates and directs efficient scheduling of crews, equipment, and subcontractors to ensure high quality construction at minimum cost.
  • Maintains daily communications with project managers regarding status of jobs.
  • Attends and contributes to scheduled corporate and project meetings.
  • Ensures foremen and crew understand daily tasks and goals.
  • Oversees effectiveness and evaluates performance of project foremen and crews.
  • Consults with subcontractors and suppliers, coordinating work procedures and specifications.
  • Presents field negotiations to project manager for approval.
  • Maintains positive relationships in and outside the workplace.
  • Inspects work in progress to ensure conformance to specs and quality.

Job description

The Superintendent is responsible for directing, coordinating and exercising functional authority for planning, organization, control, integration and completion of assigned projects within the area of assigned responsibility. This position directs the activities of crew workers on construction projects.

Location

This position works on various job sites in/around Southern Ohio. Extended/overnight travel is required.

Main Job Tasks & Responsibilities:
Safety
  • In the absence of a full time onsite safety officer, the superintendent:
    • Conducts weekly safety meetings and safety inspections
    • Reports and Investigates near misses
    • Reports and Investigates incidents and alerts Safety Director
    • Understands and enforces company safety policies
General
  • Supervises field forces, tradesmen, foremen, other trades and subcontractors/suppliers as needed to meet safety, schedule and profitability goals
  • Plans, coordinates and directs the efficient scheduling of crews, equipment and subcontractors/suppliers to ensure high quality construction at a minimum cost
  • Maintains daily communications with project managers regarding status of jobs
  • Attends and contributes to scheduled corporate and project meetings
  • Ensures foremen and crew members clearly understand the daily job tasks to be performed and weighs this against expected goals
  • Ensures the availability of backup plans
  • Oversees effectiveness and evaluates performance of project foremen and their crews
  • Expediently corrects work deficiencies by utilizing a high level of integrity aligned with the company’s core values
  • Confers with subcontractors and suppliers engaged in executing work procedures interpreting specifications and coordinating various states of construction
  • Willingness and understanding of accountability associated with the project
  • Responsible for training and mentoring of people
  • Inspects work in progress to ensure project conforms to specifications and meets quality standards
  • Ensures all required project paperwork is completed accurately and in a timely manner
  • Communicates with other management staff
  • Encourages communication and ideas from field personnel
  • Consults and/or delegates and oversees daily JSAs to recognize the safety hazards associated with the daily tasks and educates crews of hazards
  • Appoints onsite SWPPP inspector and holds them accountable for conducting inspections per contract requirements
  • Reviews production and unit cost reports daily
  • Reviews job costs with project manager on a weekly basis
  • Creates and maintains an ongoing punch list from beginning of project
  • Delegates approved duties and responsibilities to an assistant superintendent should the project require (see Assistant Superintendent job description)
  • Presents all field negotiations to project manager for approval
  • Maintains positive relationships both publicly and professionally in and outside of the work place
  • Presents professional behavior and appearance

  • Strong knowledge of earthwork operations, including excavation, embankment construction, grading, soil stabilization, and mass earthmoving activities
  • Working knowledge of grade checking, survey information, machine control/GPS systems, and earthwork production methods
  • Understanding and utilization of Best Practices/Lessons Learned using established lists, creating new practices and striving for continual improvement
  • Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere
  • Demonstrates respect for coworkers and customers
  • 30 Hour OSHA certification
  • First aid/CPR certification
Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Vocational or construction management training a plus
  • Minimum 5 years in direct field work, preferably in management/foremen level
  • Expertise in plan reading, planning and understanding of project specifications
