Job summary

James Hardie is seeking an Operations Superintendent to lead extrusion manufacturing for deck and rail products. You will drive Lean Manufacturing principles, HMOS, and Daily Management System to elevate safety, quality, and productivity across multiple lines and shifts.

The role demands 5–10 years in extrusion/manufacturing, 3+ years in leadership, and strong coaching, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Business, or related field preferred.
  • 5–10 years of experience in extrusion or manufacturing (composites a plus).
  • Minimum of 3+ years of leadership experience in a production environment.
  • Demonstrated success in strengthening and scaling Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and team development capabilities.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Solid understanding of extrusion processes and manufacturing equipment.
  • Proven problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Champion a ZERO Harm culture and ensure full compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
  • Actively take part in and support safety meetings, audits, and incident investigations.
  • Enforce PPE requirements and ensure safe operation of equipment.
  • Coach and mentor leaders and frontline team members to strengthen HMOS capabilities.
  • Drive DMS KPI tracking and tiered accountability meetings.
  • Lead opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce scrap, and optimize costs.
  • Reinforce standard work and promote process consistency across operations.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives and structured problem-solving activities.
  • Support daily extrusion operations to ensure alignment with safety, quality, and targets.
  • Monitor performance and collaborate to maximize uptime and efficiency.
  • Identify, elevate, and resolve production issues for consistent output.
  • Support workforce planning, staffing, scheduling, and shift coordination.
  • Lead, coach, and develop supervisors, cell leaders, and operators.
  • Foster accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide performance feedback and coaching to team members.
  • Support employee training, engagement, and retention initiatives.
  • Ensure products meet internal specs and quality standards.
  • Investigate defects and implement corrective actions.
  • Support accurate production and quality reporting.
  • Collaborate with Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, and EHS teams.
  • Contribute to capital projects, process enhancements, and new product introductions.

The Operations Superintendent provides leadership and operational support across all aspects of extrusion manufacturing for deck and rail products. This role ensures safe, efficient, and high-quality production across multiple lines and shifts. Reporting to the Senior HMOS Lean Manager, the Superintendent serves as a key leader, coach, and mentor, reinforcing Lean Manufacturing principles and the Hardie™ Manufacturing Operating System (HMOS) to drive employee engagement, standardization, operational consistency, and overall performance improvement.

What You’ll Do:

Safety & Compliance

  • Champion a ZERO Harm culture and ensure full compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
  • Actively take part in and support safety meetings, audits, and incident investigations
  • Enforce adherence to personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements and ensure the safe operation of all equipment.
  • Coach and mentor leaders and frontline team members to strengthen and scale HMOS capabilities.
  • Drive active engagement in the Daily Management System (DMS), including KPI tracking and tiered accountability meetings.
  • Lead efforts to identify and implement opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce scrap, and optimize costs.
  • Reinforce standard work and promote process consistency across operations.
  • Lead and take part in continuous improvement initiatives and structured problem-solving activities.

Operations Leadership

  • Support daily extrusion operations to ensure alignment with safety expectations, quality standards, and production targets.
  • Monitor operational performance and collaborate with leadership and shop floor teams to maximize uptime and efficiency.
  • Identify, elevate, and resolve production issues to support consistent output.
  • Support workforce planning, including staffing, scheduling, and shift coordination.
  • Lead, coach, and develop supervisors, cell leaders, and operators.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide consistent performance feedback and coaching to team members.
  • Support employee training, engagement, and retention initiatives.

Quality & Process Control

  • Ensure all products meet internal specifications and industry quality standards.
  • Partner with Operations, Quality, and Process Engineering teams to investigate defects and implement corrective actions.
  • Support accurate and timely production and quality reporting.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, and EHS teams to support operational goals.
  • Contribute to capital projects, process enhancements, and new product introductions.
  • Ensure alignment between production requirements and material availability.

What You’ll Receive:

As of the date of this posting, a good faith estimate of the current pay scale for this position is $110,000K to $125,000K. Placement in the range depends on several factors such as experience, skills, geography and internal equity and may change over time. This position qualifies for benefits and you will be eligible to participate in a bonus plan.
