Job summary

NorthStar Memorial Group is seeking a Superintendent for Mountain View Memorial Park in Lakewood, WA. The role leads groundskeeping, interment, and cemetery prep activities with a focus on safety and respectful service to families.

You will supervise and develop grounds personnel, coordinate burial and memorial installations, and ensure compliance with OSHA and local regulations while maintaining assets and equipment.

Qualifications

• Ability to operate heavy equipment including excavators, loaders, forklifts, tractors.
• Ability to move and install burial vaults and memorials.
• Strong leadership to train and develop staff.
• Knowledge of OSHA and safety protocols.

Responsibilities

• Maintain memorials, mausoleums, crypts, buildings, roads, irrigation, and cemetery grounds to high standards.
• Verify interments to ensure accuracy and prevent service disruptions.
• Plan, coordinate, and oversee burial, entombment, memorial installations, and cemetery prep.
• Supervise and train grounds personnel, promoting accountability and growth.
• Ensure uniforms and appearance reflect professionalism to families and visitors.
• Maintain inventories of equipment, supplies, materials, and merchandise.
• Oversee preventive maintenance of equipment, vehicles, irrigation, and infrastructure.
• Ensure daily grounds cleanup and removal of debris.
• Work with funeral home staff, families, vendors for seamless service.
• Fill any role in groundskeeping, interment, irrigation, or facilities maintenance.
• Lead safety culture via training and inspections.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA, regulations for excavation, PPE, heat prevention, etc.

Responsibilities

• Maintain existing memorials, mausoleums, crypts, buildings, roads, irrigation systems, and cemetery grounds to the highest standards.


• Verify the location of all interments, entombments, and inurnments to ensure accuracy and prevent service disruptions or record discrepancies.


• Plan, coordinate, and oversee all burial, entombment, memorial installation, and cemetery preparation activities.


• Supervise, train, coach, and develop grounds personnel while promoting accountability, teamwork, and professional growth.


• Ensure that grounds crew uniforms, personal appearance, actions, and demeanor present an appropriate image to client families and visitors.


• Maintain proper inventories of equipment, supplies, merchandise, and materials required for cemetery operations.


• Oversee preventive maintenance and repair of equipment, vehicles, irrigation systems, and cemetery infrastructure.


• Assure that all facilities are cleaned and that daily \"policing\" of the grounds occurs, wherein debris, trash, tree limbs, or other unsightly or disrespectful items are removed and discarded appropriately.


• Work closely with funeral home staff, family service advisors, vendors, and contractors to ensure seamless service delivery.


• Able to fill any role required in the groundskeeping, interment, excavation, irrigation, or facilities maintenance functions.


• Lead and promote a culture of safety through documented training, workplace inspections, hazard identification, and consistent enforcement of company safety standards.


• Ensure compliance with all applicable OSHA, state, local, and company regulations related to excavation, equipment operation, personal protective equipment, heat-related illness prevention, and workplace safety.

Qualifications

• Ability to operate and oversee the safe operation of heavy equipment, including excavators, loaders, forklifts, tractors, utility vehicles, and related machinery.


• Capable of moving and installing burial vaults, memorials, and other cemetery merchandise.


• Capable of understanding maps, plats, and cemetery records for grave location identification and layout verification.


• Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop employees in a hands-on operational environment.


• Ability to organize work, prioritize multiple tasks, and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced setting.


• Knowledge of grounds maintenance, irrigation systems, landscaping practices, and equipment maintenance.


• Work cooperatively with other individuals and departments to achieve operational goals.


• Ability to show respect, compassion, and reverence toward client families at all times.


• Understanding of OSHA and workplace safety requirements related to grounds operations, including but not limited to PPE, Hazard Communication, Excavation and Trench Safety, Heat-Related Illness Prevention, Forklift Operations, Lockout/Tagout, and Incident Reporting.


• Strong communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.


• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding work when necessary.


• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Compensation

• $87,000-92,000/yr.
