JOB GOALS

The Superintendent shall have an appropriate Arizona State Certification. Further, the Superintendent shall supervise, either directly or through delegation, all activities and personnel of the school system according to PL 100-297 and its amendments, grants, tribal resolution/charter, and adopted policies of the governing Board of Trustees.

The Superintendent is the Board's Chief Executive Officer and the administrative head of the entire school system. It is the Superintendent's duty to administer the policies of the Board and provide leadership for the entire school system. The Superintendent is the professional consultant to the Board and, in this capacity, makes recommendations to the Board for changes in Board policies and the educational program.

The Superintendent provides the initiative and technical guidance for the improvement of the school system's total program. The delegation of authority for the operation of the various functions of the school system is left to the discretion of the Superintendent.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Administers the development, coordination, maintenance, and evaluation of the educational program, cultural program, and Special Education Program.
  • Supervises the methods of teaching, supervision, and administration in effect within the school.
  • Monitors the programs and activities of the school toward specific goals, makes or provides for appropriate adjustments to improve the programs, and assesses their effectiveness, weaknesses, and progress toward the school's overall educational objectives.
  • Remains informed of modern educational theories and practices through advanced study, visits to other school systems, attendance at educational conferences, and other appropriate means.
  • Keeps the public and the Tribe informed about modern educational practices, educational trends, and the policies, practices, and challenges within the school community.
  • Ensures that all activities in the school community are conducted and communicated in accordance with applicable federal, state, and tribal laws and the policies of the governing Board of Trustees.
  • Assumes responsibility for the school's overall financial planning and the preparation of the annual budget and submits it to the Board for review and approval.
  • Establishes and maintains effective controls for all expenditures of school funds in accordance with the adopted budget and subject to the direction and approval of the Board.
  • Maintains, or ensures the maintenance of, adequate school records, including financial accounts, business and property records, personnel records, school population records, and scholastic records.
  • Provides appropriate instructions and regulations governing the maintenance of school property.
  • Provides appropriate instructions and regulations governing student safety and transportation.
  • Assumes responsibility for the use of buildings and grounds.
  • Recommends the locations and sizes of new school sites and additions to existing sites; the locations and sizes of new buildings; plans for new school buildings; appropriations for sites and buildings; and improvements, alterations, and changes to the school's buildings and equipment.
  • Oversees the preparation and submission of required reports.
  • Interprets the budget and financial matters for the community.
  • Remains current on new legislation and implements laws to the best advantage of the school.
  • Maintains an advocacy relationship with the community.
  • Attends and participates in all meetings of the Board and its committees, except when excused by the Board.
  • Along with the Board Chairman, is responsible for preparing and posting the agendas for all regular and special Board meetings to be presented to the Board Clerk.
  • Takes prompt action to implement all directives of the Board.
  • Advises the Board regarding the need for new or revised policies.
  • Provides timely advice to the Board regarding the implications of changes in statutes or regulations affecting the school community.
  • Informs and advises the Board about the school's programs, practices, and challenges and keeps the Board informed about activities operating under the Board's authority.
  • Prepares and submits recommendations to the Board regarding all matters requiring Board action, providing the facts, objective information, and reports necessary to support informed decision-making.
  • Develops and implements rules and regulations consistent with Board policy.
  • Is responsible for maintaining positive public relations on and off campus. Hosts tribal officials and groups visiting the school and responds to individuals and organizations interested in the education of students at Gila Crossing Community School. The Superintendent or designee attends district and tribal meetings as necessary.
  • Acts at their own discretion when action is necessary regarding a matter not covered by Board policy, reports such action to the Board as soon as practicable, and recommends policy guidance for the future.
  • Recommends to the Board the appointment or dismissal of all school employees.
  • Ensures that all employees are evaluated according to the schedule established by the Board.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD

A newly appointed employee will be subject to an initial ninety (90) calendar-day probationary period.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, as well as significant fine-finger dexterity. Generally, the position requires 40% sitting, 20% walking, and 40% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The position is generally performed indoors in an office environment. The employee must occasionally attend events at which large numbers of children and adults are present. The noise level in the work environment is generally quiet to moderately noisy.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a 12-month contract position. The employee will work eight (8) hours per day; however, additional hours may be necessary.
