SUNY Maritime College Job Posting: Summer Waterfront Lifeguard(s)

SUNY Maritime College located on a 55-acre scenic waterfront property on the outskirts of New York City on the Throggs Neck peninsula where the East River meets Long Island Sound. The campus blends the best of two worlds: a comfortable college-town feel with the greatest city in the world. An impressive view of the sound extends toward the North Atlantic, yet only a few miles away are Yankee Stadium and midtown Manhattan. SUNY Maritime offers an array of employment opportunities stemming from entry level to professional positions which encourage growth and development among its employees.

Job Description:

SUNY Maritime College, located in Throggs Neck (Bronx), New York, is looking for outgoing, responsible individuals to lifeguard both in the pool and at the Waterfront, with an emphasis on leading kayaking and swimming-centered Waterfront activities including water toys and swimming during boat excursions.

Responsibilities:

  • Help ensure a safe and fun learning environment
  • Respond to emergencies in accordance with certification and training
  • Perform duties as a lifeguard and water safety instructor, as needed
  • Lead Waterfront kayaking, water toy, and boat trip swimming activities
  • Prepare, maintain, and properly clean and stow all equipment
  • Assist with other summer programs at the Waterfront, including "Boogie Down to the Sound"
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by Waterfront Staff

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or ability to achieve before camp
  • Passion for and experience with working with children
  • Must be at least 16 years old by June 31, 2025. Must provide working papers if under 18 years old

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification with Waterfront Skills
  • Water Safety Instructor Certification
  • Experience in a camp setting

Additional Information:

Classification and Compensation:

  • $16.50- $25.00 per hour, 40 hours weekly; lunch included
  • Possible dorm room housing available

Special Notes: FLSA non-exempt position that is eligible for overtime monies.

Tentative Schedule:

June 23 - June 27, 2025: on-site camp training & orientation
June 30 - August 8, 2025: camp (three 2-week sessions, Monday - Friday)
August 11 & 12, 2025: post-camp debrief & pack-up
Will be required to work one Saturday, date TBD, at "Boogie Down to the Sound" event
