Job summary

Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is seeking an engineering student intern to assist with roadway access, traffic handling, and right-of-way permits in the Northeast District (Hannibal) or Regional Office (Macon).

Responsibilities include permitting, meeting with contractors, reviewing construction plans, inspecting work zones, and ensuring compliance with department standards under moderate supervision.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a relevant bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program full-time (12+ credit hours).
• Have completed 30 credit hours toward current degree; transcript needed to apply.
• GPA at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

Responsibilities

• Prepares and issues permits to utilities, contractors, developers, or individuals on department right of way per project specs.
• Meets with contractors, developers, governmental entities, individuals, and utilities to explain procedures and policies on granting permits.
• Reviews and approves proposed construction plans on right of way for drainage, sight distance, landscaping, traffic flow; may coordinate with other districts.
• Reviews work zone requests and approves or restricts activity based on traffic and community impact.
• Conducts field inspections and measures traffic control devices to ensure compliance with standards.

This position will be filled based on previous experience as an engineering student intern.

The entry salary is posted above, with year-two rate of $23.30 per hour and year-three rate of $24.92 per hour.

What You’ll Do

• Prepares and issues permits to utility companies, contractors, developers, governmental entities, or individuals for work on department right of way with designated project specifications and requirements.
• Meets with contractors, developers, governmental entities, individuals, and utility companies to explain procedures and department policies on granting permits.
• Reviews and approves proposed plans for construction on department right of way for feasibility with regard to drainage, sight distance, landscaping, curbing, traffic flow, and related requirements; makes recommendation for modification; may coordinate permit work with other district departments.
• Reviews work zone requests and approves or restricts work zone activity based on the impact to traffic and the community.
• Conducts field inspections of projects and work zones, and performs measurements of traffic control devices to ensure compliance with departmental standards.

Minimum Qualifications

All you need for success:

• Enrolled in a relevant bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program full-time (12+ credit hours).
• 30 credit hours completed/accepted toward current degree program. High school or other postsecondary program credits must be shown to be accepted by the current program through a degree transcript to apply.
• Possess and maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, or equivalent.
