Job summary

The Mayo Clinic Rochester Summer ST Experience provides delegated care to the surgical patient under the direct supervision of an RN and in collaboration with the surgical team. The program runs June 7, 2027 to August 13, 2027 at the Rochester, MN site.

Summer STs scrub, prepare and maintain equipment, instruments and supplies, and develop aseptic technique and professional communication with patients and interdisciplinary health care team members.

Job description

The Summer Surgical Technologist student (Summer ST) provides delegated care to the surgical patient under the direct supervision of the registered nurse and in collaboration with the surgical team. The designated tasks are those which have been taught in the academic programs and/or orientation, and where the individual has demonstrated competence to a designated RN or CST. The functions are those limited by law to unlicensed personnel. The Summer ST performs primarily in the surgical scrub role preparing, selecting and maintaining equipment, instruments, and supplies.

Objectives

• Apply the principles of aseptic technique while in the sterile role.
• Further develop the practical skills required to work as a competent surgical technologist in the perioperative environment.
• Attain the professional skills of interpersonal communication with all patients and interdisciplinary health care team members.
