Job summary

Legal Aid DC, a nonprofit organization, is seeking a Summer Intern for the Domestic Violence & Family Law Unit in Washington, DC. The internship runs May 27 through August 6, 2027, for 10 weeks and primarily operates from the NW DC office with potential remote work approval.

Interns report to a Staff Attorney and will engage in research, client intake, and court-related tasks. Applicants should be current law students or graduates with interest in public interest and/or domestic violence/family

Qualifications

• Current law school student or law school graduate interested in public interest and or domestic violence/family law.

Responsibilities

• Learn about all substantive issue areas we handle (custody, divorce, child support, parentage, Civil Protection Orders)
• Shadow at court-based projects (Domestic Violence Intake Center(s), Child Support Resource Center, Family Law Assistance Network)
• Drafting motions and other filings
• Conducting legal research and writing memoranda
• Contacting existing clients to provide updates or obtain information
• Conducting intake interviews with new applicants
• Contacting potential witnesses
• Drafting hearing notes/trial materials (direct examinations, cross examinations, opening statements, closing arguments)
• Reviewing and analyzing evidence
• Assist with trial preparation (organizing exhibits)
• Attending court hearings (taking notes on testimony for attorneys)
