Job summary

Legal Aid DC in Washington, DC is seeking a Summer Intern to join the Systemic Advocacy & Law Reform Program for Summer 2027. The internship runs May 27 through August 6 (10 weeks) with a 40-hour workweek.

Interns work primarily from Legal Aid's NW DC office, with possible remote work approved by the supervisor. The intern will perform legal research, case support, policy work, community engagement, document review, client interaction, and collaboration with attorneys and advocacy organizations.

Qualifications

• Current law school student or law school graduate who is interested in public interest and/or systemic advocacy.

Responsibilities

• Legal Research: Conduct in-depth legal research on constitutional law, civil rights, environmental justice, and the program's practice areas.
• Case Support: Assist attorneys with drafting memoranda, pleadings, motions, and other filings.
• Policy Support: Assist with policy priorities, draft or edit testimony, and observe council hearings.
• Community Engagement: Support outreach, tabling at events, and attending community meetings.
• Document Review: Review case-related documents, statutes, regulations, and precedent.
• Client Interaction: Interact with clients, witnesses, and experts as needed.
• Courtroom Support: Attend hearings and depositions to observe and assist.
• Administrative Tasks: Provide support to the impact litigation and policy teams.
• Collaboration: Work with interns, attorneys, and advocacy groups to advance social justice and systemic change.
