The Grid Department is responsible for securing efficient, reliable, and cost-effective access to electricity networks for Hydro's industrial operations, power production and future growth projects.

Our team works at the intersection of industry, power systems, regulation, and infrastructure development. We support Hydro's smelters, renewable energy assets, and new industrial projects by ensuring that sufficient grid capacity is available when and where it is needed.

Key areas of work include:

  • Grid connection and capacity assessments for new industrial developments, power production projects, electrification projects, and expansion plans.

  • Collaboration with transmission and distribution system operators to develop network solutions that enable industrial growth.

  • Power system analysis, including studies of network constraints, reliability, short-circuit levels, and system stability.

  • Regulatory and tariff analysis, helping Hydro navigate evolving network regulations and grid tariffs in Norway and Europe.

  • Strategic planning, evaluating the impact of new technologies such as batteries, hydrogen production, data centers, and flexible demand on future network needs.

  • Stakeholder engagement, working with authorities, grid companies, industry organizations, and policymakers to promote efficient grid development.

By combining engineering, economics, and policy expertise, the Grid Department helps ensure that Hydro has the power infrastructure required to support sustainable industrial production and the energy transition.
