Job summary

Missouri Department of Transportation in Joplin, MO is seeking an equipment technician intern to assist with maintenance and repair of light vehicles and heavy construction equipment under moderate supervision.

The role involves basic repairs, inspections and service of a range of equipment, following safety standards and operational specifications. Enrolled students with related coursework and a minimum GPA are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a relevant 2-year/associate’s degree program full-time (12+ credit hours).
  • 30 credit hours completed/accepted toward current degree program. High school or other postsecondary program credits must be shown to be accepted by the current program through a degree transcript to apply.
  • Possess and maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and perform basic repairs to automobiles, trucks, tractors, loaders, motor graders and other heavy equipment.
  • Inspect, service, repair, and overhaul transmissions, engines, clutches, drivetrains, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies and ignition systems; repair and install hydraulic controls; tune motors using standard testing equipment; dismantle, repair, and reassemble air compressors, hydraulic jacks, pumps, cylinders and related equipment.
  • Inspect, repair, overhaul, and assemble automotive components such as alternators, distributors and starters.
  • Complete mandated fleet inspections and ensure all equipment meets OSHA standards and all repairs and modifications are done in accordance with operational specifications and safety standards.
  • May weld and modify equipment and fabricate parts.
  • Review equipment maintenance records and observes employees in the operation of equipment to determine and correct operator error and ensure proper maintenance.
  • Gather computerized diagnostic information to assess vehicle repair needs.
  • Requisition and store shop supplies.
  • Install vehicle body components, lights, light brackets, mirrors, decals, and other accessories.
  • Report out-of-service equipment and estimated time needed for service in order to schedule future work.
  • Perform other responsibilities as required or assigned.
