Job summary

Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) seeks a student-intern to support highway design efforts in the Joplin region. The role involves drafting design plans, annotating files, and assisting with plan sheet production under supervision.

You will use CAD tools to calculate quantities, delineate right of way, and assist with public-facing displays and hearings. The position offers growth within MoDOT’s Southwest District and access to design data resources.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in an ABET-accredited bachelor’s program full-time (12+ credit hours).
  • 29+ credit hours completed toward current degree program; transcripts to verify eligibility.
  • Overall GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Draft and annotate design files to produce plan sheets.
  • Use CAD/design software to compute quantities and material information; summarize results.
  • Delineate right of way on plans and compute areas; print microfilm plans and maps for survey research and requests.
  • Mount displays, project overviews, maps and photos for public hearings and presentations; prepare handouts for bids, hearings and meetings.
  • Research historical databases and records; locate and reproduce highway plans stored on microfilm or CDs for designers and stakeholders.

Job Location: Joplin Regional Office (2915 S. Doughboy Dr., Joplin, MO 64804)

  • Utilize computer aided drafting, road design software and various other computer software packages to assist in the preparation of computer-generated design plans by drafting and adding text to the design file and producing plan sheets.

  • Utilize design software, computer aided design and drafting, or calculator to calculate quantities, types and sizes of materials and other information as required for project assignments; prepares summaries of quantities.

  • Delineate right of way on plans and computes areas; print microfilm plans and maps for survey research and requests.

  • Mount displays, project overviews, maps, and photos for public hearings and presentations; prepare handouts for bid lettings, public hearings, legal hearings and public meetings.

  • Research historical databases and records; locate and reproduce highway plans that are kept on microfilm or compact disk for designers, the general contractors, consultants, and utility companies.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Enrolled in a relevant ABET-accredited bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program full-time (12+ credit hours).

  • 30 credit hours completed/accepted toward current degree program. High school or other postsecondary program credits must be shown to be accepted by the current program through a degree transcript to apply.

  • Possess and maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, or equivalent.
