Job summary

MoDOT seeks a highway designer to determine highway design features and perform computations for detailed construction plans on a project. Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision, with progression from entry to senior level based on skill and experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university.
  • Occasional statewide overnight travel may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Design projects, including bridge replacements and resurfacing using engineering software; prepare reconnaissance and conceptual reports and other project correspondence, including environmental impact statements.
  • Determine highway design features including geometrics, standards for highway functional classification, profile grades, typical sections, earthwork quantities, signals, signing and lighting, construction staging, traffic control, drainage, construction limits, exceptions to design standards, and safety improvements; use CAD system and other engineering software for computations and plan preparation.
  • Assist in the development and review of detailed preliminary plans, right of way plans, and final plans for complex projects, including interchanges, urban, or major bridge projects; ensure plans are in accordance with current design standards, policies, specifications and practices.
  • Compute quantities from standards and estimate costs for projects in all stages (preliminary to final) for developing both short-term and long-term construction plans.
  • In conjunction with a Professional Land Surveyor, obtain and plot land and property lines on plans for survey notes and abstracts; compute areas; tie right of way points to centerlines; determine size and location easements.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's d e engineeringfromanABET-accreditedcollegeoruniversity curriculum.
Special Working Conditions:
  • Job may require occasional, statewide, overnight travel.
  • A postsecondary degree is the best measure to ensure candidates possess required knowledge in applied physics and mathematics, drafting, engineering processes and procedures, project management, industry ethical standards, and analyzing and modeling data.
