Summer Camp English Horseback Riding Instructor

Camp Tapawingo is a traditional, all-girls summer camp in Sweden, Maine. Our 200 acres of woods, fields and sandy beaches overlook Mt. Washington and the White Mountains in the Lakes Region of Maine. Each summer, over 100 staff members come from all over the world to teach new skills, grow campers, and make lifelong friends. As a female Tapawingo counselor, you’ll live in a bunk with 8 campers and 1-2 co-counselors, acting as the adults or “parents” in charge. You’ll spend your days teaching classes to small groups of campers in your area of expertise (Arts and Crafts, Landsports, Horseback Riding, Theater, Outdoor Adventure, or Waterfront). Male staff members are invited to apply and will stay in separate living areas.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Completed one year of college or equivalent, or at least 19 years of age
  • Education and experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or in a related field
  • Desire to be in the company of children
  • Exhibits the following skills: leadership, communication, problem-solving, mediation, organization
  • Exhibits the following characteristics: stamina, caring personality, adaptability, grit
  • Ability to work in a team and accept supervision

Bunk Counselor Responsibilities

  • Supervises campers and ensures their safety, development, growth, skill achievement, and general well-being
  • Mediates any campers’ disputes and provides opportunities for problem solving in groups
  • Carries out established camp policy and rules for campers health and safety
  • Oversee and supervise camper rising, bunk clean-up, meal times, rest hour, rec period, showers, evening activity, bed time, and activities as assigned
  • Helps each camper meet the goals established by the camp for camper development
  • Completes bi-weekly behavior reports on each camper in the bunk
  • Ensures the cleanliness of the bunk

Activity Instructor Responsibilities

  • Plans, leads, and implements high-quality, relevant classes for campers
  • Ensures the cleanliness of activity area
  • Facilitates and creates lesson plans for daily activities
  • Organizes and leads various small and large group activities
  • Assists in maintaining accurate program records, including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance

General Responsibilities

  • Knows and understands all emergency procedures associated with the camp program
  • Knows, enforces, and follows all safety guidelines associated with the camp program
  • Must be able to carry heavy loads and travel hilly and uneven terrain
  • Ability to perform a variety of tasks outside in various climates
