Job Overview

Under the direction of the Camp Director, the Summer Camp Counselor will supervise and instruct children ages 5-12. The counselor will assist Activity Instructors in facilitating structured activities.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  1. Safety and Risk Management
  • Implement and follow YMCA standards, policies, and emergency procedures to ensure safety and child protection.
  • Monitor health and safety of children, inspect facilities, and conduct health checks.
  • Supervise camp groups and ensure a safe environment during all activities.
  • Program Quality and Growth
    • Assist in implementing lesson plans and preparing materials.
    • Arrange classrooms and monitor children during activities.
    • Report suspected child abuse or neglect.
  • Leadership
    • Maintain proper staffing ratios.
    • Build positive relationships with families, colleagues, and supervisors.
    • Participate in training and meetings.
    Minimum Qualifications
    • Must be at least 17 years old.
    • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
    • Prior childcare experience is a plus.
    • Effective communication and conflict resolution skills.
    • Ability to plan and implement educational activities.
    • Proficiency with computers and safety procedures.
    Work Environment and Certifications
    • May need to obtain Community CPR and First Aid within 30 days of employment.
    • Attend all mandatory trainings and meetings.
    Physical and Environmental Demands
    • Must have strength, agility, and mobility to supervise activities.
    • Ability to perform physical tasks and lift at least 30 pounds.
    • Work in various environments, including outdoor settings with temperature variations.
    • Reliable transportation may be required.
