Position: Summer Camp Counselor (Martens Center)

Summer Camp Counselors work as a team to plan and facilitate innovative activities and programs in the core areas of Character and Leadership, Education and Enrichment, Health and Life Skills, the Arts, and Sports and Recreation. Summer Camp Counselors must be creative, energetic, and open-minded, and must strive to create positive, healthy relationships with our members.

This is a full-time, seasonal position, requiring availability Monday through Friday; June 9th - August 1st. This position is required to attend on-site training between May 29th - June 6th, 2025. The schedule for this position is a nine hour day between 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday at The Martens Center (1515 N. Market Street, Champaign).

Primary Duties Include:

  • Work with Club Director and fellow staff to plan, organize, and implement Boys & Girls Club curriculum, programs, and activities for groups. Sustain a dedicated presence on site during all hours of operation, with a diligent focus on Club members, both individually and in group settings.
  • Support program development that addresses the needs, interests, and characteristics of all members.
  • Provide direct supervision to Club members while actively engaging in programs and services.
  • Develop positive, appropriate relationships with Club members.
  • Implement classroom and behavior management techniques as necessary and inform supervisor of any areas of concern.
  • Prepare incident reports and provide suggestions or feedback on appropriate discipline; participate in conferences regarding youth behavior as requested.
  • Ensure daily service reports reflect accurate member attendance and participation.
  • Provide a clean, safe, and secure environment by reviewing programming and facilities and monitoring member behavior.
  • Communicate professionally with members, their families, staff, and partners to present a positive Club image.
  • Serve as a role model to staff and members, modeling appropriate behavior with respect to attire, boundaries, communication, and social conduct.
  • Support the enforcement of Club rules and expectations and provide informal guidance and discipline to members.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred 1 year experience in youth development.
  • Preferred previous Boys and Girls Club experience.
  • Ability to work flexible schedule based upon program/organizational needs.
  • Experience working with school-aged youth.
  • Strong youth group management/discipline skills.
  • Ability to help youth develop healthy habits and healthy lifestyles.
  • Ability to engage and develop positive relationships with youth from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to develop and implement organized youth development programs and services.
  • Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Valid Driver’s License and be approved by the Club's auto insurance provider.
