Job summary

General Motors Company is seeking a PhD-facing AI/ML intern in Mountain View, CA to conduct novel research and translate findings into practical prototypes for GM’s engineering objectives.

The role emphasizes experimental rigor, reproducibility, and collaboration with senior researchers and cross-functional teams. Ideal candidates will have strong ML foundations, Python with PyTorch/JAX/TensorFlow, and a track record of research contributions.

Qualifications

• Pursuit of a PhD in Computer Science, AI, or related field.
• Must be a current student and able to work fulltime during summer.
• Strong foundations in ML and DL, with exposure to optimization and statistics.
• Experience building and evaluating ML models in Python with ML frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Conduct original research in advanced AI areas (causal, neurosymbolic, world models, multimodal, or engineering agents).
• Translate challenges into well-defined research questions and experiments.
• Build reproducible research code and data-processing pipelines.
• Collaborate with GM R&D researchers to validate results and identify practical pathways for POCs.
