Job summary

Leonardo DRS is seeking a Summer 2027 Software Engineering Intern to join our Frederick, MD team. You will work closely with engineers, assist with engineering assignments, and help conduct limited scope testing under supervision.

Ideal candidates are engineering students with progress toward a degree, strong interpersonal skills, and a quick learner who can handle multiple tasks while learning our embedded software environment and development practices, including Git/Jira usage and Linux basics.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Engineering student; some progress towards engineering degree.
• Good interpersonal skills and ability to build a network.
• Diligent, hardworking, and quick to learn.

Responsibilities

• Work closely with engineers on various engineering assignments.
• Carry out basic work instructions and learn fundamentals of the company.
• Conduct limited scope testing under supervision of engineers.
• Complete assigned tasks on time.
• Gather and assemble data for engineers.
• May assist in research in a particular field.
• Conduct design analysis and/or calculations under supervision.
• Assist engineers with appropriate design details.
• Build a good network through interpersonal skills.
• Support, communicate and reinforce the organization’s mission and culture.
• Perform a wide variety of tasks to gain familiarity with engineering staff and practices.

Job Responsibilities

• Work closely with and assist engineers in the conduct of various engineering assignments

Preferred Qualifications

• Experienced in developing embedded drivers on Linux for interfaces such as TCP/IP, UART, I²C, PCIe, and others.
• Experienced in modern software development practices, including version control systems (Git), defect tracking tools (preferably Jira), peer code reviews, and Agile methodologies.
