Job summary

ATI is hiring a Summer 2027 Product Engineer Intern for our Natrona Heights Operations in the Pittsburgh, PA region. This onsite internship runs June to August 2027 with relocation and housing support available.

You will assist product engineers with technical evaluations, analyze material data, and participate in trials, process improvements, and reporting in office, lab and plant environments.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a technical field related to materials or chemical engineering.
• Interest in metals manufacturing and product engineering.
• Strong data collection and analysis abilities.

Responsibilities

• Assist product engineers with technical evaluations of metal products (sheet, plate, coil).
• Review material specs, customer requirements, and product standards.
• Analyze chemical composition, mechanical properties and heat treatment data.
• Support investigations on product quality and process variation.
• Identify root causes and suggest corrective actions.

ATI is seeking to hire a Product Engineering Intern for our Summer 2027 Internship Program. This position will be for our Natrona Heights Operations, based in the Pittsburgh, PA regionand will run from June to August 2027. Relocation and housing assistance is available for the summer.

Potential Essential Functions:

The Product Engineer Intern may assist with the following responsibilities:

• Support product engineers with technical evaluations of metal products, including sheet, plate, coil, or other manufactured forms.
• Assist with reviewing material specifications, customer requirements, product standards, and internal manufacturing practices.
• Analyze chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment results, and material performance data.
• Support investigations related to product quality, process variation, nonconforming material, or customer concerns.
• Assist with identifying root causes of material or product issues and recommending corrective actions.
• Work with manufacturing, quality, metallurgy, and operations teams to support product performance and process improvements.
• Participate in plant trials, product testing, and process improvement projects.
• Help collect, organize, and interpret production and laboratory data to identify trends or improvement opportunities.
• Assist with preparing technical reports, presentations, charts, and project summaries.
• Support product development, product qualification, and continuous improvement activities as needed.
• Follow all safety procedures and environmental requirements while working in office, laboratory, and plant environments.

Work Environment
This position will involve work in both office and heavy industrial manufacturing environments. The intern may spend time in production areas, laboratories, and technical office settings. Personal protective equipment is required in designated areas. The role may involve exposure to noise, heat, moving equipment, and other conditions commonly found in a metals manufacturing facility.

Learning Opportunities
The intern will gain practical experience in product engineering, materials evaluation, technical problem-solving, quality investigations, customer specification review, and heavy industrial metals manufacturing. This role provides an opportunity to apply chemical engineering and materials science concepts to real-world product and process challenges.

Requirements

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, or a related technical field from an accredited university.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior laboratory, manufacturing, quality, or engineering internship experience is preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Strong interest in metals manufacturing, product engineering, materials processing, metallurgy, or industrial problem-solving.
• Basic understanding of chemistry, material properties, phase transformations, heat treatment, corrosion, mechanical testing, or failure analysis concepts.
• Ability to collect, organize, and analyze technical data.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and PowerPoint.
