Job summary

Shield AI in San Diego invites rising 2028 graduates to join a 10-12 week paid internship focused on avionics and AI hardware development. You will work hands-on with cross-disciplinary teams to contribute meaningfully and explore a potential full-time opportunity.

You will design power electronics, RF and test fixtures, and automate tests with Python, while gaining mentorship and exposure to Shield AI’s cutting-edge platforms like Hivemind, V-BAT and X-BAT.

Qualifications

• You are an undergraduate, graduate or PhD student pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering or related STEM field.
• Strong understanding of fundamental engineering concepts, including EE, Mech E, Programming, Physics, and Mathematics.
• Experience working on multidisciplinary hardware development projects (internship, job, club, team, project, etc).
• Great written and verbal communication.
• Demonstrated history of ownership of project outcomes and delivering results.
• Record of teamwork, reliability and high standards.

Responsibilities

• Own requirements gathering, design, and validation of avionics assemblies and test fixtures.
• Gain expertise in EE disciplines to design systems for power electronics, communications, RF, and more.
• Design test stands and fixtures, including relays, PLCs, PCBAs, harnessing, and related equipment.
• Utilize Python to automate test sequences, analyze data, or run simulations.
• Attend cross-functional design reviews and advocate for design changes to simplify manufacturing.

Project Scope & Description:

• Own requirements gathering, design, and validation of multiple avionics assemblies and/or test fixtures.
• Gain expertise in multiple disciplines within EE as you design systems for power electronics, communications, RF, and more.
• Design test stands and test fixtures, which may include relays, PLCs, PCBAs, harnessing, and various other pieces of electrical and mechanical equipment.
• Utilize Python to automate test sequences, perform analysis, or run simulations.
• Contribute to and attend cross-functional design reviews. Advocate for design changes that result in simpler manufacturing processes.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required qualifications:

• You are an undergraduate, graduate or PhD student pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering or related STEM field.
• Strong understanding of fundamental engineering concepts, including EE, Mech E, Programming, Physics, and Mathematics.
• Experience working on multidisciplinary hardware development projects, which can be from an internship, job, club, team, personal project, etc.
• Great written and verbal communication.
• Demonstrated history of showing ownership of project outcomes and delivering exceptional results.
• Record of working hard, being a trustworthy teammate, holding yourself and others to high standards, and being kind to others.

Preferred qualifications:

• Expected to graduate in December 2027 or Spring 2028.
• Experience with PCB schematic and layout tools, including Altium, KiCAD, Eagle, etc…
• Experience with Python or any scripting language.
• Experience with CAD tools such as SolidWorks, NX, CATIA, etc…
• Demonstrated adaptability, agility, and the ability to innovate under pressure to meet dynamic project demands and drive successful

$38 - $73 an hour

$38- $73 an hour - Your salary will be determined by academic level.

Pay is just one part of your total rewards package at Shield AI. You may also be eligible for a stipend to subsidize relocation costs. As an intern, you will receive the opportunity to attend presentations from company leaders, social and networking events, as well as mentorship from current Shield AI Engineers. Interns are also eligible for paid company holidays.

Intern Program Dates:

June 2nd - Aug 8th

OR

June 23rd - Aug 29th

*You MUST be available to start on EITHER June 2nd or June 23rd.
