Job description

Want to spend your summer helping others explore beautiful Onset Bay? Have boating experience and a willingness to learn? Join our team at the Onset Bay Center!

The Onset Bay Center seeks a motivated Launch Driver to assist in the delivery of on-the-water and outdoor recreation programs at the Onset Bay Center in Onset, MA. The Launch Driver operates Onset Bay Center's private launch boat for programs and assists our Bay Explorers, Sailing, and partner programs for Summer ‘25. The position reports to the Onset Bay Center Manager.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Drive our Bufflehead launch boat to transport staff and participants to various locations around Onset Bay.
  2. Function as a safety vessel, when needed, assisting in providing first aid and transportation to participants who need to leave their groups for a time.
  3. Understand and effectively communicate safe boating practices to staff and participants while operating the launch.
  4. Practice safe docking and communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and town harbormaster and employees on the pier.
  5. Ensure a safe environment for all participants and equipment, on and off the water.
  6. Work with OBC senior staff to maintain the program equipment and supplies.
  7. Coordinate and communicate with OBC senior staff & instructors as well as program partners regarding weather conditions, equipment needs, and logistics.

This is a seasonal, part-time summer position. Detailed schedule will be discussed with OBC senior staff, 20 hours/week. Hourly wage is commensurate with experience. No employee benefits are provided.

BBC will pay for required USCG Limited Masters License (also known as USCG Launch Operators License) as well as CPR/First Aid, and application costs for those who already have the REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  1. Age 18 for inspected launches.
  2. 120 days underway experience on like vessels (time acquired since age 16).
  3. 90 of those days in the last 3 years.
  4. Physical, drug test, eye exam.
  5. CPR/First Aid class completion.
  6. Certificate from an approved Safe Boating Course.
  7. Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC Card).

The organization works to improve the health of the Bay ecosystem for all through education, conservation, research and advocacy.

Located on popular Onset Beach, the Coalition’s Onset Bay Center provides high-quality outdoor waterfront exploration programs for community members of all ages and abilities in a variety of activities focused on building a connection with Buzzards Bay. The Onset Bay Center works to provide access to the wonders of Onset Bay, reinforcing the link between Wareham residents and their local maritime heritage and creating generations of future Buzzards Bay stewards. The Onset Bay Center will host both full-day and half-day youth programs, as well as evening adult & family programs, throughout the summer.
