Job Description

The North Polk Community School District is a progressive educational community located in the Des Moines metro area just north of Ankeny serving the communities of Alleman, Elkhart, Polk City, Sheldahl, and Northern Ankeny. The District proudly serves over 2200 learners from preschool through 12th grade in five buildings (West Elementary, PK-2nd; Big Creek Elementary, 3rd-5th, Central Elementary, PK-5th, Middle School, 6th-8th; and High School, 9th-12th).

We are looking for qualified substitute van/suburban drivers that are excited to join the team to support student learning!

Hours

As needed.

Compensation
  • With Bus License: $30.00 per hour
  • Without Bus License: $25.90 per hour
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Obey all traffic laws.
  • Observe all mandatory safety regulations for school vehicles.
  • Maintain discipline when students are in the van.
  • Report undisciplined students to the proper authority.
  • Keep assigned vehicle and stall clean.
  • Keep to assigned schedule. Opportunities for additional runs will be occasionally be available.
  • Check vehicle before and after each operation for mechanical defects.
  • Notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
  • Discharge students only at authorized stops.
  • Exercise responsible leadership when on out-of-district trips.
  • Transport only authorized students.
  • Report all accidents and complete required reports.
  • Demonstrate organization and professionalism in fulfilling the responsibilities of the job.
  • Greet all students, faculty, staff, and visitors courteously.
  • Maintain a positive rapport with students, staff, parents, and the community.
  • Cooperate with and work in a courteous manner with co-workers and other personnel.
  • Dress appropriately for the position and work required.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude toward school, students, and job and communicate the same to the community.
  • Accept constructive criticism and suggestions and seek to improve each performance responsibility.
  • Maintain confidentiality in the school operation.
  • Adhere to applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations, board policies and administrative rules.
  • Attends STOP training sessions as provided by the state to retain Iowa school bus driver permit as issued by the State Department of Education.
  • Attends in-service classes or training sessions, as set forth by the Superintendent or Director of Transportation, or State Department of Education.
  • Assists with school bus inspections as required by the Director of Transportation.
  • Is responsible for the fueling of the bus, documenting the fuel used and bus miles on the appropriate forms.
  • Gives one day (minimum) of written notice on the appropriate form if not able to take his/her route or any trip that has been assigned, not including sickness or emergencies.
  • Does not make any alterations in routes without prior authorization by the Director of Transportation (excluding life‑threatening emergency situations).
  • Other duties as assigned.
