Job summary

East Haven Public Schools is seeking substitute teachers to provide classroom coverage district-wide when regular teachers are absent. The ideal candidate is adaptable, patient, and able to follow prepared lesson plans while maintaining a safe, engaging learning environment.

Responsibilities include taking attendance, delivering lessons, following routines, maintaining an orderly classroom, supporting diverse learners, and communicating observations to the absent teacher.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Graduate from high school or equivalent, at least 18 years of age and has experience working with school aged children
  • Teaching certification preferred but not required

Location: District Wide

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree from an accredited college or university OR
  • Graduate from high school or equivalent, at least 18 years of age and has experience working with school aged children
  • Teaching certification preferred but not required

Position Summary:

Provide classroom coverage in the absence of a regular teacher to maintain a safe, productive, and engaging learning environment.The ideal candidate is comfortable managing diverse classroom dynamics and passionate about supporting student growth.

Responsibilities:

Take accurate attendance according to school procedures

Execute lesson plans provided by the absent teacher

Follow guidelines and routines accurately and effectively

Establish and maintain a positive, orderly classroom environment conducive to learning, following school policies and behavioral standards

Present learning materials clearly, answer student questions and adapt instruction to meet varying student needs

Ensure student safety across all settings, including classrooms, hallways, playgrounds, during dismissal, etc.

Leave detailed, constructive notes for the absent teacher regarding content covered, student behavior and notable incidents

Minimum Qualifications/Skills and Knowledge Requirements:

Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills

Flexibility, adaptability and patience under pressure

Basic tech proficiency to navigate digital displays, digital attendance software, and online learning platforms. Google Suite knowledge is a plus.

Previous experience working with children in an educational, tutoring or youth program

  • Memory to perform multiple and diverse tasks over long periods of time and the ability to remember information that has been previously learned.
  • Ability to use knowledge and reasoning to solve routine problems.
  • Ability to learn and apply new information, technology and legislation applicable to departmental activities.

Ability to distinguish between public and confidential information and handle appropriately.
